Tony Gonzalez Becomes First Tight End With 1,000 Catches

Stay connected for news and updates

Atlanta Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez became only the seventh player - and first tight end - in NFL history to catch 1,000 passes. He joins an elite group that includes Jerry Rice, Marvin Harrison, Cris Carter, Tim Brown, Isaac Bruce and Terrell Owens.

He was held catchless through the first 33 minutes against the Steelers on Sunday but finally reached the milestone with 11:16 remaining in the third quarter. He caught the 20-yard pass on a seam route behind Steelers linebacker Lamarr Woodley and in front of Troy Polamalu.

He thought he had set the record about a minute earlier but his catch and run was called back when replay revealed he had stepped out of bounds.
