GHSA Boys Basketball Championships: Wilkinson, GAC, Columbia Capture State Titles

The GHSA Boys State Championships came to an end yesterday as three more champions were crowned joining Miller Grove and Norcross as though capturing championships. Wilkinson County was the first to complete their magical run capturing the 1A State Championship with a 75-68 victory over Terrell County to finish 28-0 on the season. Vashone Jones scored 19 of his game high 27 points in the fourth quarter. This championship is Wilkinson County's fifth overall championship, since 2005 the Warriors are an astounding 197-17.

The Class 2A championship pitted long time rivals Buford and Greater Atlanta Christian. GAC wasted no time and quickly turned this game into a rout with a 76-36 victory. The Spartans used a 53-20 run over the last two and one half quarters to cruise home to victory. Virginia recruit Malcolm Brogdon led the way for GAC with 20 points.

In class 3A, Columbia captured its fourth state championship in the past six years with a 56-37 victory over runner-up Butler. Columbia was led by point guard Tahj Shamsid-Deen who scored a game high 22 points. The Eagles used a late 8-0 run to cruise on to victory.

GHSA Boys Basketball Championships: Miller Grove, Norcross Capture 4A & 5A Championships

Everyone had pretty much penciled in Milton High School for a repeat 5A State Championship the moment they returned their entire starting five from last season's championship team. That is everyone but Norcross. Norcross overcame a 10 point fourth quarter deficit to stun Milton in the final 59-55. Chris Bolden scored 10 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter including the two go-ahead free throws with 28 seconds to go in the game. Shannon Scott scored 16 points for Milton while Evan Nolte added 15.

In the 4A final, Miller Grove completed a three peat as it successfully captured its third consecutive State Title defeating Rockdale county 67-59. MIller Grove's standout center Tony Parker added 21 points and 15 rebounds to what had already been an excellent season. Rockdale County was led by Bernard Thompson with 15 points.

The 3A semifinals were also concluded on Friday setting up Saturday's championship match-up between Columbia and Butler. Columbia punched its ticket to the championship game by virtue of a 72-47 victory over Eagle's Landing. Jhauston Thomas led the way for Columbia with 18 points while Algie Key added 15.

GHSA Boys Basketball Championships: 2A and 5A Finals Match-Ups Are Set

The match-up for the GHSA 2A State Championship is now set with Buford and Greater Atlanta Christian squaring off in the championship game on Saturday in Macon. Buford got their by way of a 63-59 victory over Laney that many considered an upset. T.J Shipes scored 18 points to lead a Wolves team that overcame an eight point deficit at the half. Buford led by eight points in the fourth quarter twice before holding on at the end. Jake Burnette added 11 points for the Wolves.

Buford's opponent in the 2A championship will be Greater Atlanta Christian who handled Swainsboro by a score of 71-58. Virginia recruit Malcolm Brogdon led all scorers with 29 points scoring 20 of those in the second half. Armani Moore scored 24 points to lead Swainsboro but the Tigers were unable to slow down the Spartans in order to capture the victory.

Buford and GAC are both from region 6AA. GAC has won both previous meetings between the two schools this season.

In class 5A, Milton High School continued its romp to back to back state championships and perhaps the distinction of the best Georgia High School team ever. Milton dispatched Tift County rather easily scoring a 75-53 victory at Gwinnett Arena. Jordan Loyd scored 27 points while Shaquille Johnson added 21 points off the bench. Tift County was as close as 17-14 at the end of the first quarter before Milton clamped down and only allowed Tift one field goal in the second quarter taking a 43-22 lead into halftime.

Milton's opponent in the 5A State Championship Game will be Norcross who defeated Valdosta by a score of 70-61 also at Gwinnett Arena. Chris Bolden led Norcross with 26 points. Bolden is a junior guard who has given a verbal commitment to the University of Miami. Norcross didn't go without a fight in large part due to the University of Georgia's highly rated tight end recruit Jay Rome. Rome scored a game high 33 points and had his high school coach Jesse McMillan raving about him after the game

‘’He’s one of the top five post players in the state, and not a lot of people know him except for football.’’ “He’s a rare big with size and ability. Mark Fox should take a look at him.’’

Milton will be the heavy favorite when the two teams meet Friday in Gwinnett if for no other reason than star power. The Eagles start three Major Division I signees in Shannon Scott (Ohio State), Dai-Jon Parker (Vanderbilt), and Julian Royal (Georgia Tech). That doesn't even mention Jordan Loyd who will attend Furman next season or Shaquille Johnson, a junior who has committed to Auburn.

Milton and Norcross are expected to tip off tonight at 8:30 p.m. at the Gwinnett Arena in Duluth. The game can be watched on TV on Georgia Public Television.

Georgia Boys Basketball Championships: Schedules, Brackets For High School Tourneys

Milton and Columbia are a couple of the top teams to watch in this week's Georgia High School State Championships, being played in Macon and in Gwinnett. Champions will be crowned in the 4A and 5A divisions on Friday in Gwinnett with the 1A, 2A, and 3A championships taking place on Saturday in Macon.

Milton High School is seeking its second consecutive 5A State Championship and possesses a star-studded lineup led by Georgia Tech recruit Julian Royal. Milton appears to be on a collision course with Norcross in the finals. Miller Grove is the favorite but not by much as each team is capable of capturing the championship.

Defending 3A champion Columbia is the heavy favorite to repeat this season while it looks like Buford and GAC look to make in an all Region 3 final in the 2A bracket.

Georgia fans can catch a glimpse of incoming McDonald's All-American Kentavious Caldwell-Pope as he leads Greenville High into the 1A semifinals against Wilkinson County. Greenville upset Wilcox County in the quarterfinals in a match-up of two University of Georgia recruits Caldwell-Pope and Nick Marshall in a head to head battle. Caldwell-Pope scored 40 points in the game. Greenville's opponent in the semis, Wilkinson County is the only boys team in the state that is still undefeated. However, Whitefield Academy could be the favorite in the 1A bracket.
