Matt Barrows, who covers the San Francisco 49ers for the Sacramento Bee, reports Louisville Cardinals QB Adam Froman is expected to sign with the Atlanta Falcons. This one had been rumored for a while, but we'll tentatively take Barrows' word on it -- Froman hails from Santa Rosa, which is just west of Sactown.
Froman left Louisville a highly rated passer, with the New York Times' Matt Waldman ranking him the 2011 class' No. 4 QB. The Falcons called him during the final day of the NFL Draft, as did several other teams, but ended up picking linemen with both of their seventh-round picks.
Why'd he slip out of the draft? He was a Juco transfer who only played 15 games worth of FBS football. His stats won't bowl you over, though he is accurate and doesn't turn the ball over, and he isn't much of a dual threat. Still, Football Outsiders' Doug Farrar said, "I'm sold" on the subject of Froman's pro viability. If he's being brought aboard, at worst he could challenge John Parker Wilson for the third QB spot after a year on the practice squad and eventually compete for the backup spot. But considering Mike Mularkey's cautious offense, Froman seems like a decent fit.
He'll also get to talk about ... Louisville stuff with fellow former Card QB Chris Redman.
