Actual SEC Expansion News: Texas A&M Not Definite, 14th Team Could Be Surprise

Here we go: Pete Thamel of the New York Times delivers serious insight into the process of potentially bringing Texas A&M and another school into the SEC. Citing a SEC official, Thamel reports that 11 SEC presidents will meet Sunday to discuss adding the Aggies.

Thamel's source pegs approval as likely, but not by any means definite. The conference's timeline sounds more sober than anything that would allow for a 2012 shakeup, thank the good Lord. That's not what A&M fans want to hear, and the rest of the report will disappoint more than a couple Florida State fans too.

The SEC hasn't chosen a 14th school yet, and there could be as much tension as had been expected regarding adding a school that plays in a state with a current SEC team. FSU is the only school that's been the subject of a report involving SEC interest.

While that might not be a dealbreaker, attention would then turn to ... N.C. State as a potential team No. 14? Virginia Tech and Missouri have more or less denied interest, and UNC and Duke are the toasts of their current conference. The Wolfpack would open up a new state and TV markets without straying from current footprints. Plus their Chick-fil-A game date with Tennessee could kick off a nice little rivalry. Just speculation here, but the point of all this is we have actual news up there.
