Big 12 Could Set Quick Deadline For Texas A&M To Move To SEC

Time may be running out for Texas A&M football to commit to moving from the Big 12 to the SEC. As Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe told the Dallas Morning News, “We can’t operate with an institution waiting to decide if it wants to remain in the conference. There has to be a very short time for an institution to commit.”

There’s concern on Texas A&M’s side too. “We don’t want the Big 12 to go away. We have no intention of doing anything that might precipitate that,” University president R. Bowen Loftin said. Nevertheless Loftin said he will act in the best interests of his school and the state of Texas.

The Big 12 has already lost Nebraska and Colorado in 2010 and would certainly hate to lose another program, especially one of Texas A&M’s caliber. The Aggies bounced back from a combined 10-15 record in 2008 and 2009 by going 9-4 in 2010, finishing 19th in the final AP Poll. However, they have lost each of their last five bowl game appearances, last tallying a bowl victory in the 2001 Gallery Furniture Bowl.
