Hawks Training Camp 2012: Zaza Pachulia, Devin Harris limited on 1st day of practice

Paul Abell-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

The Atlanta Hawks held their first training camp practice on Tuesday and both Zaza Pachulia and Devin Harris were held out of the contact portion.

Training camp for the Atlanta Hawks got underway on Tuesday with a pair of practices. Missing from the contact portion of the practice was center Zaza Pachulia and the newly acquired Devin Harris.

Pachulia has some sort of leg injury but it is not related to the foot ailment that kept him out of last year's playoffs loss to Boston. According to head coach Larry Drew, Pachulia suffered the injury before heading home to Georgia to play with his National team. Harris is nursing a sore knee. Drew indicated that both players were moving well during the other portions of practice.

Atlanta was besieged with injuries last season and can ill-afford to start out that way this season. Neither Pachulia's or Harris' injuries are thought to be serious so it is probably just a matter of easing them into camp. With so many new faces on the team, training camp practices will be very important as Drew looks for the right combinations to put on the floor.

During media day on Monday, Larry Drew talked about his desire for the Hawks to play much faster this season. He said that was only possible if the guys into camp in shape. According to Drew it appears that they did just that:

"Me personally, I thought this was a very good morning," Drew said. "A lot of guys came into camp in shape. The energy was really good. My focus for this morning was to set the tone for who we are going to be on the defensive end. ... Looking at our squad, we are a very capable scoring team. We have to establish ourselves on the defensive end. That is going to be our mindset through this training camp."
