Hawks Training Camp 2012: Atlanta readying new, faster offense

Greg M. Cooper-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Larry Drew and the Atlanta Hawks have spent the opening two days of training camp working on installing a new offensive system.

The Atlanta Hawks are two days into practice and most of the focus has been on installing a new offense that better suits all of the new faces that now make up the team's roster. At this point we don't know if the new scheme will resemble Drew's motion offense but the two terms I kept hearing at media day were pick and roll and spacing.

If practice is any indication then the Hawks are trying to speed things evidenced by them running 5 on 5 offensive drills with an 18 second shot clock. Drew indicated that the players were starting to grasp things a little more on Day 2 of practice but there is still a long way to go. Drew said that the entire offensive package may not be in by the time the Hawks open the regular season on Nov 2.

"To get everything put it, it would be ludicrous for me to say we'll get it all in before the first regular-season game," Drew said. "We will not have it all in. I'm going to gradually put things in mindful of the fact that the things we already have in and the things they are picking up, I can't give them too much. I want to get good in certain areas first."
