Falcons, Raiders are tied heading into the 4th

Atlanta Falcons defensive end John Abraham forced a Carson Palmer fumble with 4:24 remaining in the third quarter, and Ray Edwards picked it up and returned it to the 2-yard line. But the Raiders mounted a goal-line stand, and the Falcons were only able to get a field goal to tie the game at 13 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Raiders defense has been the story of the game, but neither team's offense has really been able to consistently put together scoring drives. The Falcons have three turnovers and the Raiders have two, all five playing a big part in the low-scoring affair. Both defenses have come up with big plays only to watch their respective offenses squander golden opportunities to put touchdowns on the board.

The Falcons have found ways to win ugly games like this during the Matt Ryan era, but the Raiders also like games to be ugly. And this one is definitely ugly. The Raiders only have 281 total yards after three quarters but the Falcons are even worse with only 217.

Matt Ryan's mistakes hurt Falcons against Raiders

The Atlanta Falcons are in a tight contest with the Oakland Raiders as turnovers continue to plague their offense, leading to a 13-7 Raiders lead at halftime.

The Raiders may only be 1-3, but they showed in their win over the Pittsburgh Steelers that they have the capability of playing with the big boys, and they're showing it against the Falcons with three first-half interceptions of Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan.

Ryan's third interception turned into a Raiders touchdown as the Raiders' Denarius Moore broke free of a missed tackle by Falcons linebacker MIke Peterson to scamper into the end zone on a 25-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Carson Palmer.

The Falcons' touchdown came on a 4-yard touchdown pass to Roddy White during a drive that looked llke Ryan had shaken off his earlier struggles. The Falcons defense then responded with a goal-line stand, preventing the Raiders from scoring a touchdown from the four-yard line.

But the Raiders keep coming back behind a defensive backfield that is taking advantage of Ryan's mistakes.

Falcons trail in ugly game against Raiders

The Atlanta Falcons and Oakland Raiders engaged in a sloppy first half filled with three turnovers including two early interceptions by Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, leading to a 3-0 Raiders lead after the first quarter.

The Falcons are looking to continue their undefeated season but are off to an uncharacteristically bad start, especially on offense. Ryan has been playing on an elite level throughout the early part of the season but the Raiders have him on his heels as their defensive backfield, led by Joselio Hanson and Michael Huff, have picked him off twice and prevented his high-powered offense from getting on track outside of a 26-yard catch by Roddy White.

The Raiders have outgained the Falcons 98 to 70 in the first quarter and look like the team that beat the Pittsburgh Steelers this season rather than the struggling squad from their other games.

This was viewed as a trap game for the Falcons coming in and the ugly first quarter is exactly what the Raiders wanted.

Mike Smith needs win to tie franchise wins record

Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith is just one win from matching Dan Reeves' record with the most wins for a head coach in franchise history, with 49.

Babineaux, Nicholas questionable for Falcons

The Oakland Raiders and Atlanta Falcons have announced their inactive players for Sunday's matchup in Atlanta, and only the Raiders are missing any starters.

Oakland will be without right tackle Khalif Barnes against a good Falcons defensive line. The Raiders will also be without starting cornerback Shawntae Spencer, who has started and played in just two of Oakland's games this year because of injuries, as the team looks to contain the Falcons potent passing attack.

While the Falcons are missing several reserves, the team will have Jonathan Babineaux (groin) and Stephen Nicholas (ankle). Both players were listed as questionable to play against the Raiders.
