Yellow Jackets offense keeps rolling in 3rd

The third quarter picked up right where the first half left off as both the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and North Carolina Tar Heels scored touchdowns within the first minute of play.

For Georgia Tech, Jamal Golden returned the second half kickoff for 100 yards. The score broke a streak of eight consecutive rushing touchdowns, giving the Yellow Jackets the 34-29 lead after the failed 2-point conversion.

After receiving the ball, it took UNC one play to surge back ahead as quarterback Brynn Renner connected with Giovani Bernard for a 78-yard touchdown. Bernard bounced off tackles in the open field after making the catch, recording the first passing touchdown of the game.

Once again, the Georgia Tech offense was met with little resistance on the ensuing drive as the Yellow Jackets regained the lead on Robert Godhigh's 4-yard rushing score. They then got the ball back in UNC territory after intercepting Renner, leading to a 35-yard field goal by Chris Tanner.

Godhigh continued his impressive play, scoring on a 27-yard run and a 32-yard reception to help the Yellow Jackets separate from the Tar Heels and take a 58-36 lead.

UNC closed the gap at the end of the quarter on Renner's 11-yard touchdown pass to Quinshad Davis.

The first quarter set the tone as both teams exchanged multiple touchdowns in a high-tempo opening period. Four different players found the end zone early, including Georgia Tech's Tevin Washington, who scored on a 25-yard run.

After neither defense had much success at the start of the contest, the Yellow Jackets got a key turnover on quarterback Bryn Renner's fumbled snap early in the second quarter. Georgia Tech capitalized on it, scoring on David Sims' 11-yard rushing touchdown to conclude an 80-yard drive for a 21-14 lead.

North Carolina responded with an 11-play, 94-yard drive, capped off by Romar Morris' 30-yard score to tie the game.

Quarterback Vad Lee put Georgia Tech ahead again with a 1-yard score on fourth-and-goal, set up by his 63-yard bomb to Darren Waller.

At the end of the second quarter, the Tar Heels took the lead on A.J. Blue's 5-yard rushing touchdown, his second score of the game, and a successful two-point conversion.

The two teams combined for 591 yards of total offense in the first half.

Yellow Jackets, Tar Heels tied after 1st

In a high-scoring first quarter, the North Carolina Tar Heels and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets exchanged early scores en route to a 14-14 tie heading into the second frame.

The Tar Heels got on the board first a little less than two minutes into the contest with Giovani Bernard's 4-yard rushing touchdown. The running back's score was set up with a 40-yard kick return by Romar Morris and quarterback Bryn Renner's 47-yard strike to receiver Erik Highsmith.

Georgia Tech wasted little time in responding, evening the score on Tevin Washington's 25-yard touchdown run nearly two minutes later.

After North Carolina took the lead again with A.J. Blue's 1-yard rushing score, the Yellow Jackets came right back to knot it up on a 12-play, 70-yard drive, capped off by quarterback Vad Lee's 1-yard touchdown run.

At the end of the quarter, the Tar Heels moved the ball into Georgia Tech territory, looking for their third score of the contest.
