Mark Richt needs post season hip surgery

Mark Zerof-US PRESSWIRE

Georgia coach might seek a hip replacement to stop constant pain.

Georgia head coach Mark Richt will likely have hip replacement surgery in the off-season, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Richt, who is on the verge of leading Georgia to an appearance in the SEC title game, has been coaching through pain throughout the season. He attributes the pain to a freak swing set injury he suffered years ago while trying to impress his wife at a family picnic.

"I was swinging really high on a big heavy swing set with those big heavy chains," Richt said. "You’ve got those big S-hooks on top, and you’re swinging, and I swung enough to where the one on the left came out. So when I come back down, the chain on [on the right] stayed taut and the other one just goes. I turned sideways and the first thing that hits the ground is my left hip. Just smashed it."

Richt said that his hip hadn't bothered him in quite some time before he aggravated it with the popular P90X workout routine.

"I thought I just had a hip-flexor injury," Richt said. "But I said if I quit now I’m just going to get fat. So I just kept doing it."

No date has been set for Richt's potential off-season surgery. The Bulldogs face Auburn this Saturday.
