Georgia Vs. Auburn: Marshall Morgan shrugs off ugly miss

Kevin Liles-US PRESSWIRE

A wide-left field goal plagues Marshall Morgan, but the Bulldogs' kicker remains confident.

Freshman kicker Marshall Morgan has been using this week to return to form after missing his only field goal in last week's 37-10 victory over Ole Miss. With a week to practice and put the miss out of his mind, Morgan is now prepared for the Bulldogs' next game.

Speaking to the Athens Banner-Herald, assistant coach John Lilly believes in the first-year placekicker, despite an ugly miss last week:

"The only thing I told him is the one thing to keep in mind is you'll never have one that is that bad again," Lilly said. "You got your worst one out of the way. You're going to have a great career the next three and a half years."

Morgan has gone 6 of 9 on field goals this year, including 50+ yard kicks against Missouri and Tennessee. The development of a young kicker can be difficult, especially one thrust into a vital role early in his career. This isn't something lost on Lilly, who understands that freshmen take time and patience:

"In a lot of cases, the bigger the kick, the better he's been," Lilly said. "I think freshmen all go through different curves. He's made some big kicks for us. We've got a lot of faith in him and his ability. I think he'll continue to improve."

Against Auburn, the Bulldogs hope they wont need to lean on their kicker, but thankfully if it comes to that they have a confident player ready to make up for his miss last week -- calling his kicking in practice "amazing."
