Tuesday was the final day of the first round at the 2012 French Open (or Roland Garros, if you prefer). While favorites Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova had little trouble advancing past their opening opponents, there was one huge -- and historic -- upset in the women's singles.
Serena Williams lost her opening match against No.111-ranked Virginie Randazzo. After taking the first set 6-4, she lost two straight sets, 6-7 (13), 3-6. This loss marks the first time that Williams has ever lost her opening match in a Grand Slam event. She will not be advancing to the second round to join her sister, Venus Williams, who won her opening match on Sunday.
The second round for men's and women's singles will begin on Wednesday.
