2012 SEC Baseball Standings: Bulldogs Eyeing Conference Tournament

Georgia's three-game sweep over Auburn this past weekend has shored up the Bulldogs standings and puts them just a little closer to nailing down a spot in the SEC Conference Tournament to be played in Hoover, Alabama in late May.

South Carolina takes over the top spot in the SEC East and opens a three-game set with the Bulldogs on Friday in Athens. Kentucky and Florida are both still right there in the middle of things and the time is now for Georgia who simply can't afford a series loss to the Gamecocks this weekend and remain in the divisional race.

Here is a look at the current SEC Baseball Standings:

2012 College Baseball: UGA Completes Sweep Of Auburn With 9-3 Win On Sunday

Georgia completes its first SEC Sweep of the season with a 9-3 win over the Auburn Tigers on Sunday. The win is the Bulldogs' fourth straight in the conference and evens their conference record at 12-12.

The Bulldogs scored five runs in the first two innings and made that lead stand up behind some solid pitching from starter Luke Crumley.

Curt Powell and Kyle Farmer had three hits apiece and Farmer hit his fourth home run of the season in the second inning. Colby May added two hits and two RBIs for the Bulldogs. Georgia pounded out 16 hits in the game. Blake Austin and Creede Simpson had two hits each for Auburn.

Crumley earns the win after allowing six hits and only one run run in a career-high five innings pitched. Trey Cochran-Gill takes the loss after allowing five earned runs in just two innings of work.

2012 College Baseball: Georgia Defeats Auburn 6-5 In 11 Innings

The Georgia Bulldogs trailed the Auburn Tigers for the majority of the game, but in the bottom of the 11th inning as Kyle Farmer connected on a RBI-single to give Georgia a 6-5 win over Auburn Saturday at Foley Field.

Michael Palazzone pitched 6 innings and gave up 4 earned runs with 7 hits as the Bulldogs faced a 4-2 deficit going into the seventh inning. Georgia turned it around as Farmer's double scored Conor Welton, then Brett DeLoach came through with another double scoring Farmer. After Auburn pushed the lead to 5-4, Georgia came back with a leadoff walk by Jonathan Hester and was brought in on a fielder's choice by Curt Powell, who reached second on a throwing error. With the game tied at 5-5, Farmer's game-winning single sealed the deal.

Needless to say, Georgia's head coach David Perno was pleased.

"I thought we pitched pretty well today and the defense made some big plays, I liked how we hung in there and battled. We never could break it open; we had some chances early but we didn't give up a big inning either so that helped. I liked how we responded in the 11th. We've been in some close games this year, and I think playing at home helped us today because we've lost some tough ones on the road." -- Bulldogs head coach David Perno

Georgia Baseball: Bulldogs Beat Auburn 5-2

So far, so good for the University of Georgia baseball team. The Bulldogs took the first game of a three-game set against SEC rival Auburn on Friday, starting off the series with a 5-2 victory.

Alex Wood dominated on the mound for Georgia, pitching eight strong innings. Wood struck out 10 while giving up just two runs on four hits and three walks. Wood improved to 6-1 on the year with the win. Pete Nagal pitched a scoreless ninth inning, striking out two without giving up a hit or a walk to notch his first save of the season.

Georgia took the lead in the third inning on a Curt Powell single. Auburn tied the game up in the sixth, but, fueled by four walks and a hit batsman, Georgia scored four times in the sixth to take a 5-1 lead. Auburn scored again in the eighth, but could not muster up enough offense against Wood and the Bulldogs.

The series between Georgia and Auburn continues on Saturday afternoon, as Michael Palazzone gets the nod for the Bulldogs.
