With a contract previously thought to be untradeable, the Hawks engaging in talks with the Brooklyn Nets would help Atlanta create a more well-rounded and balanced roster.
According Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, the Atlanta Hawks are engaged in discussions to trade Joe Johnson to the Brooklyn Nets:

Johnson signed a lucrative, six-year deal worth $124 million dollars with Atlanta in the summer of 2010, a contract that was previously thought to be untradable. If they are able to move him, it creates a lot of financial flexibility for the organization to be able to build a more well-rounded and deeper team.
The Nets are looking to retain free-agent Deron Williams whom they acquired in a trade with the Utah Jazz last February. Williams has been rumored to be considering the Nets and his hometown Dallas Mavericks as a possible landing spot this summer.
The NBA free agency period begins at midnight on Sunday, July 1.
