The 2012 Olympics begin this week. The U.S. women's swimming team will be led by Georgia Bulldogs alum Allison Schmitt.

In the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Allison Schmitt won a bronze medal in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay. The Georgia Bulldogs alum will return to the Summer Games this week, as the 2012 Olympics get underway in London. This time, she has her sights set on the gold and will be competing in a number of events.

Schmitt broke her own American record for 200-meter freestyle during the Olympic trials in June, finishing in a time of 1:54.40. She also finished first in the 400-meter freestyle and placed third in the 100-meter freestyle.

Also representing UGAon the swim team will be Kara Lynn Joyce and Shannon Vreeland. The Bulldogs also have Andrew Gemmell on the men's team.

Georgia native Eric Shanteau of Snelville will also be competing for the U.S. men's team in the 100-meter breast stroke.

Men's swimming, of course, will feature American superstars Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte duking it out for their place at the podium.
