Team USA Swimming: Pair Of Former Georgia Swimmers Earn Bronze Medal In 400m Free Relay

The United States women's swimming team earned their first relay medal of the 2012 Olympic Games as they finished in third place in the 400m freestyle relay to earn a bronze medal. This relay featured a pair of former Georgia Bulldog swimmers in Amanda Weir and Allison Schmitt.

Both Weir and Schmitt swam in the prelims and helped give Team USA the fastest time heading into Saturday's finals with a time of 3:36.53. Weir had a split of 54.37 seconds for her 100 meters while Schmitt anchored the team in the prelims with a split time of 54.08.

In the finals Weir was not in the lineup, but Schmitt was in and was once again the anchor. The relay team did improve their of 3:34.24, but it was not good enough as they fell to Australia who set an Olympic record with a time of 3:33.15 and coming in second was the Netherlands who finished just a half-second ahead of the United States with a time of 3:33.79. The United States was in first place after the first two swimmers but felt to second after the third leg and was in second place heading into the final 50 meters but ultimately finished third once Schmitt touched the wall.
