2012 Olympic Medal Count: China Leads After Day 1, Italy Tied With U.S. For Second

China leads the medal count after the first day of the 2012 London Olympic Games with six total medals with four of them being gold and the other two being silver medals. Just behind China is the and Italy who are currently tied with five medals apiece.

Swimmer Ryan Lochte has won the only gold medal for the United States on the first day when he cruised to victory in the 400m IM. The United States also won a pair of bronze medals in swimming in the men's 400m freestyle with Peter Vanderkaay finishing third, and the other was in the women's 400m freestyle relay. That 400m free relay featured to former Georgia Bulldogs in Amanda Weir and Allison Schmitt.

Two of China's four gold medals came in swimming, another came in shooting and the final one came in weight lifting. Italy's gold medals came in fencing with their came in archery where they defeated the United States in a thrilling finish.
