The Americans failed to medal in the women's 200m butterfly at the 2012 Olympic Games. Jiao Liuyang added to China's gold medal count by winning the race with a 2:04.06 time. Kathleen Hersey was the United States' top swimmer in the race, finishing in fourth place with a 2:05.78 time. Hersey, who grew up in Atlanta, finished three tenths of a second behind Natsumi Hoshi -- who won the bronze medal for Japan.

Spain's Mireia Belmonte Garcia won the silver medal, finishing 1.19 seconds behind Liuyang with a time of 2:05.25.

Hersey will undoubtedly feel disappointed finishing fourth, as she had the best time in the competition's seminal, with a time of 2:05.90. Despite the fact that she bested that time, she still finished in fourth place. Such is life at the Olympic Games.
