MLB Standings Update: Braves Trail Nationals By 4.5 Games In N.L. East

The Atlanta Braves went 4-2 this past week, but the Washington Nationals went 6-1 this past week to extend their lead in the National League East to 4.5 games. The N.L. East race will come down between the Nationals and Braves over the final six weeks of the seasons since the New York Mets are in third and 16 games back.

The Braves do get to face the Nationals six times the rest of the way with each team hosting three games, so there is a chance to make up some ground on that 4.5 game lead.

The next series for the Braves is a three-game road series against the San Diego Padres.

Braves vs. Mets: Jon Niese Dominates, Ben Sheets Struggles In 6-5 Loss

Not much went right for the Braves on Sunday night. A team that always seems to struggle on Sunday Night Baseball, Atlanta scored just one run against Mets starter Jon Niese and a late comeback attempt fell short. The Mets, on the other hand, scored early and often against Ben Sheets to win by a score of 6-5.

New York led 6-1 heading into the ninth inning. After loading the bases with two outs, Juan Francisco and Michael Bourn drew walks. Martin Prado then hit a two-run double to cut the deficit to 6-5. Jason Heyward came to the plate with the tying and go-ahead run in scoring position, but he struck out to end the threat.

It was a good effort from Atlanta, but it was too little too late. They end the six-day road trip with a record of 4-2.

Tommy Hanson Injury: Braves Righty Makes Rehab Start At Gwinnett

Braves right hander Tommy Hanson looks like he will be headed back to the Braves rotation soon after pitching four innings in a rehab start at Triple-A Gwinnett.

No word on what the Braves might do once Hanson is ready to come back off the disabled list. There is a chance that Atlanta could go with a six-man starting rotation in the early going but Kris Medlen could be the odd man out again if they decide to stick with five.

By pitching Sunday, Hanson likely won't be activated before Friday although he is eligible to come off the disabled list on Wednesday.

Freddie Freeman, Kris Medlen Lead Braves To Victory Over Mets

The Braves scored all nine of their runs in the first two innings on Saturday night, which was more than enough against Mets ace Johan Santana. Freddie Freeman's homer highlighted a seven-run second inning for Atlanta, providing Kris Medlen with tons of room to work as the Braves went on to win by a score of 9-3.

Medlen continued his strong work on the mound, tossing 6.1 innings of one-run ball. He tossed 88 pitches, a season high for him. Meds scattered five hits and a walk, striking out seven Mets batters with a nice mix of his fastball, changeup and curveball.

Luis Avilan and Cory Gearrin worked the final 2.2 innings for the club, splitting the duties evenly. Avilan surrendered two runs on a hit and walk, while Gearrin gave up nothing more than two hits.

Freeman roped a two-run double down the first base line in the first inning to give Atlanta a 2-0 lead. After a couple of bloop hits to ignite a rally, Medlen helped his own cause with a seeing-eye single that snuck through the right side of the infield to make it 3-0. Michael Bourn, Jason Heyward and Chipper Jones all singled to plate one run, pushing the lead to 6-0.

Then came one of the biggest homers of the season from Freeman. He crushed a belt-high fastball to center field, clearing the big apple. Early estimates have the shot at 455 feet. Look for it on the highlight shows tonight, folks.

The Mets scored a run in the second on an RBI-single from Andres Torres. They added two more in the bottom of the eighth once the game was out of hand.

The Braves will go for the series sweep on Sunday Night Baseball. They'll turn to Ben Sheets, while New York has Jon Niese pencilled in to make the start.

Braves Vs. Mets: Saturday Game Preview, TV Info And More

The Braves look to seize control of this three-game series against the Mets on Saturday when Kris Medlen (2-1, 2.37 ERA) takes the mound for Atlanta. The Braves' pitching has been outstanding in recent weeks, posting a 1.76 ERA in their last 16 games even with an injury plagued starting rotation.

The Braves have won 13 out of those 16 games and look to keep it rolling against a Mets squad that doesn't have much to rely on when R.A. Dickey isn't on the mound. They'll send Johan Santana (6-7, 3.98 ERA) to the hill on Saturday, but that doesn't mean the same thing it meant a few years ago.

Braves Vs. Mets Final Score: Paul Maholm Pitches Complete Game Shutout To Win 4-0

Braves starting pitcher Paul Maholm had one of his best games of his career as he pitched a complete game shut out against the New York Mets to win 4-0.

Maholm allowed only three hits and struck out give to get his 10th win of the season, and this was his second start for the Braves. The Mets starting pitcher Matt Harvey had a good game in his own right by allowing two runs on only two hits.

The pair of runs against Harvey came when Jason Heyward hit a two-run home run in the first inning, and that was all the scoring that the Braves needed. The other two runs also came on another two-run home run by Dan Uggla which came off of Josh Edgin.
