Bobby Labonte and Juan Pablo Montoya tangled as they were battling to stay on the lead lap, and race leader Mark Martin wound up being the victim. Martin's Toyota spun down onto pit road and slammed into the end of the pit wall, destroying the left-rear corner of his dominant machine. The impact actually split the oil cooler, sending all the oil flying from the car and a brief fire under the right-rear corner.

Martin, thankfully, is out of the car but his day and of course his bid for his sixth Michigan International Speedway win is over after just 64 laps, 54 of which were spent with his No. 55 out front.

Kasey Kahne, who bumped Martin in the rear to send him spinning as Martin was trying to avoid Labonte, also spun through the grass but did not appear to take much damage.

Matt Kenseth inherits the lead after the accident ahead of Martin Truex Jr., Carl Edwards, Paul Menard, and Clint Bowyer.

The accident occurred as drama was developing with Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart, who apparently has dropped a cylinder on his No. 14 Chevrolet.
