Overbay last appeared in a game with the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 27. Overbay was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks on July 30, before being released by Arizona on Aug. 6.
The Baltimore Orioles and Cincinnati Reds both reportedly had interest in signing the veteran first baseman.
Overbay could end up being the left handed bench bat that the Braves were looking for, and will join the Braves on Sept. 1, once rosters expand to 40 players.
Prior to his release, Overbay hit .292/.367/.448, with two home runs and 10 doubles in 96 at bats.
