UGA Football Preseason: Bulldogs Nearly Injury-Free

The Georgia Bulldogs have had only five players get injured in full-contact drills since camp began. Two of the players, wide receiver Tavarres King and center David Andrews, are expected to make a quick return from a lower leg strain and an undisclosed illness respectively.

The only player on that list expected to miss substantial time is guard Hunter Long, who is recovering from a broken foot. The other players on the list were just walkon players.

Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt has acknowledged that the number of injuries have been down during camp. He told Chip Towers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution some reasons why the number of injuries is down.

  • "We've been on grass the whole time, which I think helps," he said of Georgia's three Bermuda grass fields. The Bulldogs have had only very limited work on their two FieldTurf fields.
  • "We were practicing in the morning instead of the afternoon during camp."
  • "We really thought it was going to be hot in the afternoons the next three weeks and it's really been pretty mild. I think that helps."
  • "I think our guys had a great summer of conditioning, so I think they've been recovering faster."
  • "I think we've added a lot of post-practice stretching, which I think has helped them."
  • "And then sometimes you're just fortunate."

The Bulldogs are preparing for their opening game against the Buffalo Bulls on September 1.
