Buffalo Vs. Georgia: Freshman See First Action For Bulldogs

The Georgia Bulldogs had little trouble putting away the Buffalo Bulls in the Bulldogs' season opener on Saturday, and it was production from some true freshman that helped allow Georgia to coast to their first victory of the 2012 season.

Most impressively, running back Todd Gurley rushed for an even 100 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries against the Bulls defense, more than living up to the recruiting hype he garnered. Gurley also returned a kickoff 100 yards for a score.

Aside from Gurley, plenty of other first-year players stood out on Saturday, including starters kicker Marshall Morgan, punter Collin Barber and right tackle John Theus.

"We did have some freshmen taking some snaps ... I really do like this freshman class," Georgia coach Mark Richt told DogBytes. "I've been impressed with them athletically. They're very coachable, teachable ...I think we did a good job recruiting that class."

Buffalo Vs. Georgia Reaction: Dawg Sports Analyzes UGA Win

UGA fans are likely to come away from the Bulldogs' season-opening win against Buffalo the same way the fan of an NFL team would come away from a preseason victory -- overly analytic, but not too concerned with what they saw.

The good folks at Dawg Sports would tell you as much. The Dawgs won 45-23 on Saturday. And to add, they converted 50 percent of their third downs, did not turn the ball over, lost just 22 yards to penalties, generated 485 yards of total offense, averaged almost six yards per carry and nearly ten yards per pass and never trailed (not that they should have).

Here's some analysis from T Kyle King of Dawg Sports:

Some of the ‘Dawgs did have pretty good days, of course. Damian Swann, whose leadership was needed in a depleted secondary, did a good job in the defensive backfield. Tavarres King overcame Aaron Murray's early overthrows to lead all Georgia receivers with six catches for 117 yards, including a 63-yard touchdown reception. John Theus looked good as a first-time first-teamer before he left the game with a worrisome ankle injury. (Fortunately, Theus says he's all right.) Todd Gurley dazzled in his debut, tallying a trio of touchdowns in the course of racking up 100 rushing yards on eight carries and another 127 yards on a pair of kickoff returns, one of which went the distance. Taken as a series of discrete elements, there were a lot of things to like about this afternoon's game.

Buffalo Vs. Georgia: Rantavious Wooten Solid In Return To Action

Georgia junior wide receiver Rantavious Wooten was solid in the Bulldogs' season opener Saturday, going for two receptions, 45 yards and a touchdown including a 38-yard touchdown grab in the 45-23 win over Buffalo.

But the win (and the touchdown, and the other seven-yard catch) meant more to Wooten than a typical season-opening win. Wooten sat out last season as a redshirt, an option he chose after a car accident left him with a concussion three games into the 2011 season.

According to Jonathan Branch of the Augusta Chronicle:

"It felt so good to out there," Wooten said. "It felt good playing against somebody else and getting after it. That’s been my drive this whole summer – just get out there, stay healthy and make it to the first game."

Georgia head coach Mark Richt said it was hard not to notice Wooten’s approach in the offseason.

"(Wooten) did great today," he said. "He had a great off-season and camp. Everyone bragged about what a great summer he had. It’s paying off for him. Guys made comments about the type of off-season he had."

Buffalo Vs. Georgia: So Far So Good For Bulldogs Offensive Line

Georgia piled up 485 yards of total offense on Saturday and 227 yards rushing all the while fielding an inexperienced offensive line that was a concern the entire preseason. Three quarterback sacks of Aaron Murray leaves room for improvement but the offensive line appeared to pass its first test.

Center David Andrews and tackle John Theus made the first starts of their career on Saturday. The entire unit only totaled 31 combined career starts with the bulk of that going to Chris Burnette and Kenarious Gates. Mark Richt wasn't happy with the sacks following the game Saturday but indicated that it wasn't a poor performance from the group.

"They did OK, I don't know if it was just an unbelievable performance. We had a couple of sacks there that weren't very pretty. They had a three-man rush at one time and the edge rushers would come and squeeze the tackles... and sack Murray - I wasn't too thrilled about that. But it wasn't a poor performance. We've got some things to clean out, but we'll get there if we stay healthy."

One area of concern heading into next week's matchup with Missouri is the status of tackle John Theus who left Saturday's game with an ankle injury. Richt and the team are hopeful that Theus will be able to play as the Bulldogs open the SEC portion of their schedule but he will be evaluated throughout the week.

UGA Football Injury Update: Malcolm Mitchell, John Theus Among Bulldogs' Walking Wounded

Georgia nearly escaped August injury-free, but now have several concerns heading into next week's matchup with Missouri.

Malcolm Mitchell missed Saturday's game against Buffalo after sustaining an ankle injury during last week's practice. Head coach Mark Richt was hopeful that Mitchell will be able to play against Missouri, but his status won't likely be determined until later in the week.

"I don't know how long it'll be, hopefully he'll be able to practice this week and play. But I really couldn't tell you right now if he'll be able to or not."

Freshman offensive lineman John Theus suffered an ankle injury during the second half of Saturday's win over Buffalo, and left the game without returning. Richt was a little more hopeful on the prospects of Theus being able to play this week.

"Of all the positions, an ankle sprain of an offensive lineman, you have more guys that just wrap it up tight and go," Richt said. "When you get some of your more skilled athletes, it's just tougher to stop and change direction and those types of things. I've seen more offensive linemen go with a bum ankle than a skill guy, so that might help us in that regard."

Running back Ken Malcome also left Saturday's game with a hand injury. There hasn't been any word on the severity of his injury. Wide receiver Marlon Brown also sat out Saturday's game with a leg injury, but he is expected to play against Missouri.

UGA Acknowledges Suspensions Of Bacarri Rambo, Alec Ogletree

Georgia head coach Mark Richt acknowledged that Bacarri Rambo and Alec Ogletree both missed Saturday's win over Buffalo because they were suspended, but he stopped short of saying when they might return to the field.

"Yes, they were suspended for this game," Richt said. "We'll find out what happens next week."

Georgia has been reluctant to release suspension info for competitive reasons. They don't want Missouri knowing for sure whether or not Ogletree and Rambo will play next week.

It has been reported that both players are facing multiple-game suspensions for failed drug tests that were administered by the university. Connor Norman started in place of Rambo at safety on Saturday while Christian Robinson took over at Ogletree's inside linebacker spot.

Buffalo Vs. Georgia 2012: Final Score And Game Recap

The Georgia Bulldogs begin their 2012 regular season with a 45-23 win over the Buffalo Bulls. Georgia jumped out to an early 24-6 lead but saw Buffalo score 10 unanswered points to draw within 24-16 at the half. The Bulldogs regained control in the second half behind Aaron Murray and freshman running back Todd Gurley.

Gurley burst onto the scene in the first half with a 10-yard touchdown run on his second career carry to put the Bulldogs up 7-0. He followed that up with a 100-yard kick off return for Georgia's second score. Gurley wasn't finished as he added a 55-yard touchdown run in the second half. Gurley's debut looks nice with 100 yards rushing, two touchdowns on just eight carries.

Murray got off to a somewhat erratic start but the final numbers look good. Murray completed 15 of 26 passes for 158 yards and three touchdowns. Tavarres King caught six passes for 117 yards and a score while Michael Bennett added five catches for 76 yards and a touchdown.

Alex Zordich finished with 148 yards passing, 83 rushing and two total touchdowns. Running back Branden Oliver added 112 yards on 31 carries and a touchdown.

Georgia amassed 485 yards of total offense against Buffalo but the 347 yards total allowed is concerning. 199 of that came on the ground and that certainly won't make defensive coordinator Todd Grantham happy.

John Theus Injury: Bulldogs Right Tackle Out With Bad Ankle

Freshman right tackle John Theus' name can be added to the growing list of Georgia walking wounded. Theus left the game after stepping on a defensive players' foot and twisting his left ankle. He had to be helped to the sideline and is currently having the ankle iced by the team's training staff.

Georgia's offensive line has been an area of concern throughout the preseason and losing Theus for anytime hurts their depth. Watts Dantzler would likely switch to right tackle if Theus was unable to play next week against Missouri.

Buffalo Vs. Georgia Score: Bulldogs Take 31-16 Lead Into 4th Quarter

Georgia takes a 31-16 lead into the fourth quarter of its 2012 season opener. The Bulldogs defense picked up its play after a somewhat loose second quarter and held the Bulls at bay.

Aaron Murray picked up the only score of the quarter on Georgia's first drive of the second half. Murray connected with Rantavious Wooten for a 38-yard touchdown reception to finish off a six play, 82 yard drive.

Murray now has completed 13 of 23 passes for 243 yards and two touchdowns. Tavarres King has six receptions for 117 yards and a score. Freshman Todd Gurley leads the way on the ground with six carries for 40 yards. Keith Marshall has seven carries for 31 yards.

Running back Ken Malcome left the game in the third quarter with a hand injury and will not return.

Ken Malcome Injury: Bulldogs Running Back Out With Hand Injury

Georgia running back Ken Malcome has left the game with a hand injury and will not return according to a report by Chuck Dowdle. Malcome got the start on Saturday afternoon and rushed six times for 32 yards.

Without Malcome the Bulldogs will likely turn to a pair of freshman for the remainder of the game. Todd Gurley made a splash in the first half with a touchdown run on his second carry and a 100-yard kick off return. He has five carries for 25 yards including his 10-yard touchdown run. Keith Marshall also made his debut in the first half and has four carries for 19 yards.

Georgia hasn't built a lot of rhythm with the running game this afternoon. Another option at tailback would be Richard Samuel who has taken some snaps at fullback against Buffalo.

Buffalo Vs. Georgia Halftime Score: Bulldogs Take Shaky 24-16 Lead In Break

Georgia takes a 24-16 lead into halftime of its 2012 season opener against Buffalo. The Bulldogs at one point led 24-6 and looked like they might put this one away early but 10 unanswered points by the Bulls has them within striking distance at the half.

After taking a 14-6 advantage in the first, the Bulldogs added to it with a 35-yard field goal by freshman Marshall Morgan to make the lead 17-6. Georgia extended the lead to 24-6 on a 63 yard pitch and catch from Aaron Murray to Tavarres King later in the quarter.

Buffalo quarterback Alex Zordich has been a thorn in Todd Grantham's side the entire first half and got the Bulls' offense moving again. Brandon Oliver's two-yard run with 2:12 remaining in the half cut capped off a 94 yard drive that cut the lead to 24-13. The Bulls got the ball back again late in the half and reached Georgia's one-yard line before having to settle for a field goal.

Aaron Murray completed 6 of 13 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown. Freshman Keith Marshall leads the Bulldogs' ground game with four carries for 19 yards. Fellow freshman Todd Gurley burst on the scene in the first quarter with a touchdown run and a 100 yard kick return for another score. Tavarres King has four catches for 98 yards including a 63 yard scoring strike from Murray.

Georgia's defense allowed the Bulls 243 total yards in the first half and Buffalo held the football for over 18 minutes in the first half. Time of possession is a recipe for an upset and the Bulldogs will need to do a much better job of controlling the ball in the second half.

Buffalo Vs. Georgia Score: Bulldogs Hold 14-6 Lead At End Of 1st Quarter

Freshman running back Todd Gurley burst onto the scene in his debut for the Georgia Bulldogs. Gurley put the Bulldogs on the board early capping off a 53-yard drive with a 10 yard touchdown run on his second carry of the game.

Buffalo answered back with an impressive 75-yard drive against Georgia's heralded defense ending with a Alex Zordich 16 yard touchdown pass to Alex Neutz. The extra point was no good and the Georgia lead was trimmed to 7-6. Gurley went to work again on the ensuing kickoff running it back 100 yards for Georgia's second touchdown and a 14-6 lead.

Aaron Murray completed 5 of 9 passes in the first quarter for 74 yards. Gurley rushed two times for 11 yards with a touchdown. Freshman running Keith Marshall also made his debut with two carries for 10 yards. Zordich has been the offensive star for the Bulls throwing for 41 yards and touchdown while also scrambling for 31 yards on the ground.

Georgia did get some bad news at the end of the quarter when Gurley headed to the locker room with an undisclosed leg injury.

Buffalo Vs. Georgia Score: Todd Gurley Puts Bulldogs Up 7-0 Over Buffalo

After Georgia's defense held Buffalo to a quick three-and-out the Bulldogs offense went to work with a seven play, 53 yard drive that ended with a 10-yard touchdown run by freshman running back Todd Gurley.

The big play on the drive came on 3rd and 13 when Aaron Murray connected with wide receiver Michael Bennett on a 33 yard catch down to the Buffalo 11-yard line. Gurley punched it in on his second carry giving the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead. Freshman kicker Marshall Morgan added the extra point.

Ken Malcome got the start for Georgia at running back and had two carries for nine yards. Murray completed 2 of 3 passes for 38 yards. Murray's only miss came on a long attempt where he overthrew an open Tavarres King.

Georgia Vs. Buffalo: Dawgs Missing Several Players In Season Opener

A few unannounced suspensions surfaced through Twitter on Saturday before the UGA season opener against Buffalo. Due to injuries and suspensions, the Bulldogs were expected to be undermanned in this one, but even fewer players than anticipated are not dressing or expected to play.

According to Seth Emerson, Georgia inside linebacker Alec Ogletree and safety Bacarri Rambo aren't dressed for action today. Marc Weiszer reported that wide receiver Marlon Brown won't play because of an injured leg.

The Dawgs shouldn't need a full staff to be competitive against Buffalo, but this obviously would be a terrible game for them to lose. And UGA fans can't feel good about waiting for this day, only to find out a few key players won't be on the field.

Malcolm Mitchell Injury: Georgia CB Sprains Ankle, Will Not Play On Saturday

Malcolm Mitchell will miss Georgia's season-opening game against Buffalo, according to a report from The Telegraph. Mitchell was expected to make his debut at cornerback for the Bulldogs, but will miss the game after spraining his left ankle in practice. According to spokesman Claude Felton, there are no projections on his availability for Georgia's Week 2 game against Missouri.

Mitchell was expected to do more than play cornerback, as previously reported here at SB Nation Atlanta. According to coach Mark Richt, Mitchell was to contribute on defense, offense and special teams. Mitchell played as a wide receiver for the Bulldogs in the 2011 season, catching 45 passes for 665 yards and four touchdowns.

Buffalo Vs. Georgia: Richard Samuel Prepares For New Role

With the Georgia Bulldogs prepare for the 2012 season, Richard Samuel is prepared for a new role this season. The fifth year senior has moved from running back to linebacker and back again during his time in Athens, but this year Samuel has a dual role, splitting time between tailback and fullback.

In an interview with Chris Starrs of the Athens Banner-Herald, Samuel talks about the difficulties in playing two positions,

"It’s a little difficult because you get tired at times doing reps at one position and then doing reps at another position. And you have to be able to differentiate in your mind what you’ve got to do and what your job responsibilities are so you don’t get them confused."

Samuel has rushed for 768 yards in his Georgia career, but injuries and an influx of players pushed him back to fourth on the depth chart. Samuel saw a possible opening at fullback and decided to make the move and now sits as the backup there, behind only Merritt Hall.

Samuel is looked on as the leader for Georgia's young group of running backs, and starting quarterback Aaron Murray expects a lot in Samuel to help prepare them for the upcoming season,

"I’m expecting a lot from Richard — both his play on the field and his ability to mentor the younger guys. The biggest thing he’s contributed this summer is his knowledge — his knowledge of the playbook, his knowledge of what it takes to compete in the SEC and in college football. He’s done a great job of mentoring those guys."

Samuel knows this and is happy to give advice to anyone who comes his way,

"It makes me feel good, it makes me feel like I’m helping out somehow to get the young guys ready because they’re going to be the ones that will rotate in the game with me. By helping out the best I can, it makes me know they’re ready when it’s their time to play and I feel comfortable with them being in there."

Buffalo Vs. Georgia: Todd Grantham Prepared For Defensive Changes

As the Georgia Bulldogs prepare for their Week 1 matchup against the Buffalo Bulls, defensive coordinator Todd Grantham is prepared to deal with a shuffling lineup as they prepare to deal with multiple suspensions with the starting defense.

In an interview with Marc Weizer of the Atlanta Banner-Herald, Grantham knows no matter what happens, the team have to move forward no matter what,

"The thing I look at is the season’s not going to stop, the team we’re playing is not going to feel sorry for us," Grantham said. "It’s how you make the best of the situation."

With starters Chase Vasser and Sanders Commings suspended for the first two games of the season along with fellow starters Bacarri Rambo and Alec Ogletree expected to be suspended to start the year, Grantham will have to play musical chairs to begin the year, but he has plenty of experience from the last year.

Due to injuries and suspensions, Grantham was forced to use 13 different starting lineups last year, only having the same defense just twice all season. With Commings and Vassar gone for the first two games, Grantham is ready to move things around when they are eligible to play again.

Buffalo Vs. Georgia: UGA DBs Coach Scott Lakatos Facing Bulls For The 11th Time

Coaching carousels create strange bedfellows in college football, but when Georgia and Buffalo meet Saturday, Bulldogs' secondary coach Scott Lakatos will be facing the Bulls for an eleventh time spread over four schools. How is such a thing possible on the Georgia staff? Because Lakatos has only very recently fled for warmer weather, per the Athens Banner-Herald:

Lakatos, who coached only in the Northeast before he was hired to coach Georgia’s secondary in 2010, faced Buffalo four times while on staff at Maine from 1995-98, three times at Rutgers in 2001-03 and three times at Connecticut in the 2004, 2005, and 2008 seasons.

The good news for Lakatos is that the Bulls finished 76th in the country in passing offense last season in a miserable 3-9 campaign. With plenty of Georgia DBs suspended, Lakatos will get somewhat of a breather before UGA heads to Missouri next week.

'Russ' Promoted To Uga IX

Interim no more, two-time fill-in mascot "Russ" has been promoted to Uga IX, Georgia announced on Thursday.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, an official conferring of the title will occur on Sept. 15 at the Georgia Bulldogs' home game against Florida Atlantic. Russ is the half-brother of a previous Uga, Uga VII, who died in November 2009. Uga VII's death was Russ's first opportunity to fill in as the visible on-field mascot for the Bulldogs. His first interim stint lasted the final two games of 2009 and the first six of 2010.

Russ again filled in during part of 2010 and for the entire 2011 season. In his 23 games serving as mascot, the Bulldogs have compiled a 14-9 record.

"Like many great and memorable Bulldogs, Russ has earned the opportunity to serve in this capacity," University of Georgia president Michael Adams said in a statement.

Georgia opens its schedule Sept. 1 against Buffalo at home.

Georgia Vs. Buffalo: Bulldogs Look Set To Have Successful Season

With the Georgia Bulldogs preparing to begin the 2012 season on Saturday against the Buffalo Bulls, many Georgia fans are wondering if this is the year that the Bulldogs get back in the national championship conversation.

In an article published Thursday, Matt Hinton at Sunday Morning Quarterback thinks that Georgia will have a successful season this year, thanks in large part to a roster loaded with experienced playmakers on both sides of the ball:

Believers will point to the lineup, which is largely intact and features both a third-year starter at quarterback (Aaron Murray) and arguably the best defensive defensive player in the nation (Jarvis Jones) anchoring one of the best defenses overall.

Hinton also notes that Georgia does not have to face the Alabama Crimson Tide, LSU Tigers or Arkansas Razorbacks this year, and their toughest conference game will be a trip to Columbia to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Georgia Vs. Buffalo: Backup Quarterback Hutson Mason Doesn't Want To Play This Season

Georgia backup quarterback Hutson Mason doesn't want to play Saturday when the Bulldogs open their season against Buffalo. He doesn't want to play all season long. And if all goes according to his plan, he'll sit on the bench behind starter Aaron Murray and redshirt, giving him two more years to potentially earn a starting job, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

"I never really pictured it to go this way," Mason said. "It's so funky and there are so many what-ifs.

"I've never hoped Aaron gets hurt," he continued. "I love Aaron. I'm knocking on wood hoping Aaron lights it up and stays healthy."

While backing up Murray the the past two seasons, Mason has played sparingly and completed 27-of-47 passes for 356 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. As a senior at Lassiter High school in Marietta, Ga., Mason set Georgia high school records with 4,560 passing yards and 54 touchdowns.

"Coaches have told me that I'm the No. 2 guy, and if Murray goes down I'm going to go in," Mason said. "But then you'd have to figure out how long he might be out for and that kind of thing. So I'm just treating it the exact same way and preparing the same way I did last year. I'm hoping I don't play but, at the same time, I've got to get ready."

Georgia Vs. Buffalo: Watts Dantzler's Versatility Helping Bulldogs

Georgia Bulldogs offensive lineman Watts Dantzler has been working at multiple positions during camp, and his versatility will help the team during the 2012 season.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution quotes:

"I actually took some snaps at center this summer," said Dantzler, a 6-foot-7, 320-pound sophomore from Dalton. "If they wanted me to I would do that but I don't think Boss would like it. Other than that I've played just about every position. And I think it's helped me. I'm very confident in the playbook and the calls."

Watts has recently gotten work at both left tackle and guard. He was beaten out of the right tackle job by freshman John Theus.

Georgia Vs. Buffalo: Jay Rome Likely A Game-Time Decision

Georgia Bulldogs tight end Jay Rome will likely be a game-time decision, according to head coach Mark Richt. Rome, who has been bothered by a hamstring injury, will continue to be evaluated by the coaching staff in practice.

Defensive end Cornelius Washington and nose guard Kwame Geathers have also been limited by injuries, but neither player is listed on the injury report for Saturday's game against Buffalo, so they should be good to go. Reserve offensive lineman Hunter Long is the only Bulldogs scholarship player who has been ruled out of the season opener at this point.

Georgia hosts the Buffalo Bulls on Saturday.

Georgia Vs. Buffalo: Malcolm Mitchell Will Play On Offense, Defense And Special Teams

Malcolm Mitchell will play some offense, defense and special teams for the Georgia Bulldogs in the team's season-opener against Buffalo, according to head coach Mark Richt:

"He'll definitely play offense, defense; he'll play some special teams, too," coach Mark Richt said of the player who led Georgia in receiving yards per game last season. "He will more than likely will return a punt or two and he might even return a kick. I'm not sure on that part. He'll play in all three phases of the game."

Mitchell, who is set to be one of Georgia's starting cornerbacks, was a big part of the offense in 2011, as he caught 45 passes for 665 yards and four touchdowns.

Georgia Vs. Buffalo: Bulldogs Getting Familiar With Bulls' Defensive Coordinator

The Georgia Bulldogs have been going through old film in an attempt to get a handle on the style and tendencies of new Buffalo defensive coordinator Lou Tepper.

Buffalo went 3-9 last season, but Bobo said he's watching footage from way back "to try to get a base of any consistencies of the places he's coordinated. There might be one or two blitzes that you're not going to rep tremendously but you might mention to your quarterback to say, ‘Hey, we might get this.'"

Tepper, who has been out of coaching since 2010, has had stints at LSU, Illinois, Edinboro and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Mark Richt admitted that his staff still isn't entirely sure what Tepper has planned for the Bulldogs.

Georgia Vs. Buffalo: Freshman RB Pair Keith Marshall And Todd Gurley Draw Praise

Georgia Bulldog freshmen Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley are generating some buzz ahead of the season-opening game against the Buffalo Bulls, according to a report from The Telegraph. Senior linebacker Christian Robinson, impressed with Marshall's slick moves in practice, is anxious to see them in action against Buffalo:

"Keith put a move on somebody the other day that I hadn’t seen in a while," Robinson said. "He shook two people and they both fell down. I haven’t seen anyone since I’ve been here that could do something like that. Maybe A.J. (Green) had that kind of juking ability. That’s pretty special to me. I haven’t seen someone just blatantly fall down because some one juked them, so I want them to be turned loose so they can stop hitting us.

Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo was more subdued, praising the consistency of the two backs, saying they were dependable and he was looking forward to seeing them play.

Neither Bobo nor Robinson will have to wait long. The Bulldogs take on Buffalo Saturday at 12 p.m.

Georgia Vs. Buffalo Depth Chart: Ramik Wilson And Malcolm Mitchell To Start

The two biggest changes in Georgia's opening day depth chart are linebacker Ramik Wilson and cornerback Malcolm Mitchell both in starting positions on defense.

Wilson returns after a difficult freshman year in which he was forced to cope with the death of his father. This year, defensive coordinator Todd Grantham was happy to give Wilson the starting job at outside linebacker, stating:

"[Ramik] has worked hard, has developed his skills, he'll be a good player for us there. I look forward to watching him play there Saturday. He's earned it."

Mitchell, also in his second year, is a supremely talented athlete who actually finished second in receiving last year for the Bulldogs. He'll start the year at cornerback, filling in for the suspended Sanders Commings.

When Commings returns after serving his two-game suspension, Mitchell could return to the offense, but that will depend on where his coaches feel he is most needed.

Georgia Vs. Buffalo: Greg McGarity Speaks On Georgia Suspensions

As Bacarri Rambo and Alec Ogletree are set to serve a suspension for reportedly failing multiple drug tests, University of Georgia head coach Mark Richt remained silent about why the two players were still on the depth chart.

"I just think we'll just have to wait and see. We'll wait and see. Time will tell."

In an interview with Seth Emerson of The Telegraph, University of Georgia Athletic Director Greg McGarity spoke about why Rambo and Ogletree were still on the depth chart while Sanders Commings and Chase Vasser, who were also suspended, were removed.

"If there's something that's a situation like Sanders Commings, who's arrested, all these types of things, then we go ahead and deal with that at that time. Then it goes through our review process and then the determination is made by our committee on what the suspensions, if any, should be. And that's usually made public because it's a legal matter.

"Those that are institutional policies, or may be team policies, what have you, there's no reason to go ahead and make those announcements until it's the right time. And the head coach can go ahead and make that determination when is that. Because of competitive advantage."

McGarity said that Richt can announce the suspensions at anytime, including waiting until after the game to discuss why they held the players out.

Georgia Vs. Buffalo: Bulldogs Release Depth Chart

The Georgia Bulldogs have released their depth chart for Saturday's opener against the Buffalo Bulls at Sanford Stadium. There aren't very many surprises, but there are a few noteworthy items according to Macon.com:

- Yes, Bacarri Rambo and Alec Ogletree are first-teamers. Sanders Commings and Chase Vasser are not on the depth chart, and their two-game suspensions have been announced. I wouldn't put much stock in that. Last year Rambo was on the depth chart before the opener, but he was suspended.

- At cornerback, Malcolm Mitchell and Branden Smith are listed as the starters. Damian Swann is listed as Smith's backup, and Devin Bowman is Mitchell's backup.

- But lest you think Mitchell is forgotten on offense, he is listed third on the depth chart at split end, behind Marlon Brown and Michael Bennett. On the other side, at flanker, it's Tavarres King to start, with Chris Conley and Rantavious Wooten as co-second-teamers.

Georgia Vs. Buffalo: Connor Norman Ready To Step Up In Place Of Bacarri Rambo

When the Georgia Bulldogs take the field on Saturday against the Buffalo Bulls, they could be without All-American safety Bacarri Rambo, who violated UGA's drug policy in the spring. If Rambo is sidelined for the Sept. 1 opener -- and beyond -- there will be a lot of pressure on whomever is chosen to replace him.

So far, it seems that either Corey Moore or Connor Norman will have their number called to fill in for Rambo, although it appears that Norman is the most likely candidate at this point. And according to a Macon.com report, the 5-foot-10, 208-pound Norman is prepared and ready for the challenge:

"Actually, I prepared a lot for that last year, too, just due to certain circumstances," Norman said.

Last year, Norman played in every game, finishing with 13 tackles. This time around, it doesn't feel too different for Norman, other than being a bit more comfortable with having played. But as far as the possibility of playing the opener, that's not very different.

"Everybody actually knows who I am now," Norman said, laughing.

Georgia Vs. Buffalo: Malcolm Mitchell Adjusting To Life On Defense

When Malcolm Mitchell decided he to play football at Georgia, instead of playing cornerback -- the position he was being recruited for -- he decided he wanted to play wide receiver instead. He made the transition from defense to offense almost seamlessly and was one of the Bulldogs best wideouts last season.

But this season, Mitchell is moving back to cornerback to help Georgia in the secondary.

And even though he still feels he's a wide receiver at heart and misses playing offense, Mitchell fully expects to be a two-way player and compete on both sides of the ball one day according to a Macon.com report:

"But right now I really don't want to worry about it. Because the decision's been made. It's been put in process. So, at the end of the day that was a choice that I've just gotta deal with right now. I feel like it's gonna work out good.

"But when I look at the receivers, I know I'm gonna be back over there eventually. Or I'll be doing both. So as long as I can do both, it doesn't matter how much or which one I do."

Georgia Vs. Buffalo: Quarterback Aaron Murray Has Confidence In The UGA Offensive Line

If Aaron Murray is going to lead the Georgia Bulldogs to a successful 2012 season, it's all going to start with the offensive line giving him enough time to throw the ball and make plays from under center. After losing three top-notch linemen in Cordy Glenn, Ben Jones and Justin Anderson, the O-line was the biggest question mark heading into fall practice.

But so far, the offensive line unit has done a good job of protecting Murray in practice, and according to DogBytesOnline, the junior signal caller has done all he can to help his linemen jell and he feels confident in the group to protect him on the field:

"The offensive line has done a tremendous job all camp of really giving me time to feel relaxed there in the pocket and not really feel like I'm under pressure at all and be able to sit there and make accurate throws," Murray said.

Murray, in turn, has helped the offensive line by using his knowledge from four years in the Bulldogs' offense to get them headed in the right direction.

Georgia Vs. Buffalo: Jeff Quinn Will Adjust To Losing Khalil Mack On Defense

If Buffalo is going to have any chance of defeating Georgia on Saturday, they're going to have to find a way to put pressure on Aaron Murray. But without their best starter on defense, it's going to be pretty tough task.

Khalil Mack, a senior linebacker who leads the Bulls in sacks, will be suspended for Saturday's game after being involved in a fight with a teammate. Buffalo head coach Jeff Quinn understands what the loss of Mack will mean to the defense, but he's ready to move forward with the other linebackers he has on the the roster according to DogBytesOnline:

"There's no question," Quinn said. "He's been very disruptive and one of our best players, but we've got to continue to move forward and we've got other guys like (linebackers) Willie Mosely and Kendall Roberson who have both stepped up. It's a great lesson that our kids have to understand when there's a guy who gets hurt or a guy's not able to compete in a game, our kids have to be able to step up. We've got a mentality called the `Next Bull In' and that happens. I know Georgia's faced it and we're facing it."

Georgia Football Depth Chart: Battle For The Starting Kickoff Spot Rages On

While there is no question who will handle field goals and extra point duties for the Georgia Bulldogs this season, the battle for who will handle kickoffs still rages on leading up to Georgia's opener against Buffalo on Saturday.

Marshall Morgan, a freshman, and senior Jamie Lindley are putting a lot of pressure on the coaches in practice to decide who will assume starting kickoff duties according to DogBytesOnline:

"I can tell you it's between me and Marshall," Lindley said after Monday's practice. "Even today, we were both still kicking off. We both did reps during practice. It's for them to decide."

Lindley is no stranger to competition as he found himself engaged in a similar battle with Blair Walsh as a walk-on freshman in 2008.

Buffalo Bulls head coach, Jeff Quinn, says his team is no stranger to large, loud and hostile road environments. Sure the Bulls may not have a legitimate chance to beat Georgia -- especially not at Sanford Stadium in front of 92,000 screaming fans -- but he's confident his squad won't be intimidated, according to DogBytesOnline:

"This will be the third-largest stadium our program have ever competed in," Buffalo coach Jeff Quinn said Monday. "We've played Penn State, we've played Tennessee, we've played Auburn, Baylor. These kids have had a taste of these kind of games and opportunities. To have players that are returning - we have 16 returning starters back that were at Tennessee that will be playing for us at Georgia - I feel good that the maturity and the development of our program is where we want to be. Certainly it will be important to see how we gauge against a top SEC team."

Georgia Vs. Buffalo: Mark Richt And The Bulldogs Are Ready For The Season Opener

The Georgia Bulldogs open their 2012 campaign on Saturday against the Buffalo Bulls in Athens. After grueling fall practices, the players are ready to go and so are the Georgia coaches.

On Monday, Mark Richt spoke at the Touchdown Club of Athens and talked about a number of topics -- including Saturday's matchup -- according to an Athens Banner Herald report.

On the week leading up to the season opener, Richt said:

Having so much time for this makes us crazy. We're tired of practicing. We'd rather play tomorrow night if we could, but we can't, so what we've got to do between now and then is keep our fundamentals up and don't go backwards. But the game plan is in and the guys are repping it every day this week and a couple of days last week, so we'll definitely be ready to play a game by Saturday.

The head coach also showed a lot of respect for the Bulldogs opponent and gave a glimpse into what the gameplan will be against Buffalo:

Well, they play very hard. They're an outstanding team. One thing offensively they have is a running back who is a really tremendous player. He gained over 1,000 yards last year and he's poised to have another great season, so we've got to stop the run first. They've got a brand new quarterback who just won the job recently and we'll see how he holds up if we can stop the run.

University of Buffalo head coach Jeff Quinn spoke on several different topics during his teleconference on Monday, including the excitement that comes with traveling to Athens to play the Georgia Bulldogs:

"Certainly we’re excited and ready to play. Georgia Vs. Buffalo Odds: Bulldogs Begin Game Week As 37.5 Point Favorites

Georgia will begin the 2012 season a healthy favorite over visiting Buffalo, starting the week as a 37.5 point favorite according to Odds Shark. That margin is in stark contrast to the Bulldogs' previous season opener, in which they entered the 2011 Chick-Fil-A Kickoff as three point underdogs to Boise State.

The Bulldogs are coming off of two consecutive losses - to LSU in the SEC Championship and Michigan State in the Outback Bowl - but the Bulls enter Saturday coming off of a 3-9 campaign in the MAC and losers of five of their last six in the 2011 season. Buffalo was 6-6 against the spread last season, while Georgia was 8-6, and 4-2 at home in Athens. The Bulls are 1-4 against the spread in their last five road games, and 0-5 overall.

The last time Georgia was favored by 30 or more points they failed to cover, against Kentucky on November 19 of last season.

Georgia Vs. Buffalo: Tickets Still Remain For Season Opener

The Georgia Bulldogs have not sold out their season opener against Buffalo, though they're close, according to ticket manager Tim Cearley:

There were still about a 1,000 tickets remaining as of Friday, according to ticket manager Tim Cearley.

That means the Bulldogs could be in danger of not selling out a home season opener for the first time since 1998.

The tickets, which are $45 apiece, will be sold at the East end ticket office on Saturday. The school also has about 1,000 tickets remaining for the Sept. 15 matchup against Florida Atlantic.

Georgia's opener is set for Sept. 1 at 12:21 p.m. ET. The SEC Network will televise the contest.

UGA Football Preseason: Offensive Line Questions Still Lingering

Lack of experience and continuity on the offensive line is the main hang-up for the Georgia football program going into the 2012 season. The Bulldogs' defense is impressive, they have a veteran quarterback, and some would even argue the Dawgs' schedule isn't particularly difficult.

But with the uncertainty on the offensive line, the potential for this team is in question. Don't tell that to right guard Chris Burnette, though:

"A lot of people probably don't think we're capable of being a just good enough offensive line," right guard Chris Burnette told The Telegraph. "But I think we can. I think we can be better than that. I think we can be great."

Only time will tell. The Dawgs are replacing three starters on the O-line, all of whom went in the NFL Draft this year.

UGA Football Depth Chart: Special Teams Spots Still Up For Grabs

Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt has a pair of freshman as his starting kicker and punter in Marshall Morgan and Collin Barber, but he said once the season starts, coaches might want to see more than one guy in those positions. That goes for the return teams as well.

Branden Smith and Malcom Mitchell are the top two at punt return and kickoff return. Damian Swann is in the mix as a kickoff return specialist for the Dawgs as well.

Richt said players have to perform in the ballgames for them to separate themselves on the depth chart. Special teams will be definitely be worth paying attention to. Georgia coaches have a pretty good idea who their starters are on offense and defense.

Aaron Murray Named Offensive Captain

According to Joey Johnston of the Tampa Tribune, the Georgia Bulldogs have named quarterback Aaron Murray as the team's offensive captain for the team's Sept. 1 opener against Buffalo:

Murray took over the starting quarterback job as a redshirt freshman in 2010 and in two season's as the team's starter, the 6-foot-1 junior has amassed 6,198 yards through the air with 59 touchdowns and 22 interceptions with 14 of those coming in his first season under center.

With Murray at the helm, he has led the Bulldogs to two postseason bowl appearances.

UGA Football Depth Chart: Tight Battle For Starting Fullback Spot

Georgia Bulldogs running backs coach Bryan McClendon told the Athens Banner-Herald there isn't much separation for the starting fullback spot between walk-on Merritt Hall and senior Richard Samuel.

Hall is the planned starter for the Sept. 1 opener against Buffalo, but he and Samuel are splitting time in practice while Samuel is also seeing time at tailback, where Ken Malcome is the planned starter. On Samuel, McClendon said:

"We’re going to try and keep him at both for as long as we possibly can before we have to have him at one spot or another. The thing that he does so well, he allows you to sort of be in a couple different personnel (groupings) at the same time as far as him being that versatile player."

Malcome got the vote of confidence from coach Mark Richt at tailback, but the team is also looking at Todd Gurley, Keith Marshall and Samuel to get some time at the position. McClendon said that Gurley in particular has had "a very strong camp."

UGA Football Depth Chart: RB Ken Malcome Likely To Be Named Starter

The Georgia Bulldogs are very close to naming a starting running back for their season opener against the Buffalo Bulls, and after the team's third scrimmage, head coach Mark Richt said that he is "pretty sure" that it will be sophomore Ken Malcome:

"I'm pretty sure Ken Malcome is going to start," he said. "But something could change between now and then."

"I don't know for sure," he said. "I even haven't talked to the staff yet about how we're gonna do it. Even when we do that I doubt I'll announce the thing because I don't even want them to know. I want them to keep fighting and competing. We'll tell them the night before the game maybe."

This is something of a surprise, because freshman Todd Gurley been the Bulldogs' leading rusher through three scrimmages, totaling 199 yards on nine carries with four touchdowns. Malcome has 117 yards on 16 carries and one touchdown.

For his part, Malcome isn't going to get too far ahead of himself after Richt's statement that he currently sits atop the depth chart:

"I mean, it's not that I don't care," he said. "That's what I was already thinking anyway. But I'm gonna keep pushing. I'm not going to let that one little statement go to my head."

Even though Richt is leaning toward naming Malcome the stater, he said that an announcement will not be made until the night before their season opener on Sept. 1, 2012.

Georgia Football Scrimmage: Bulldogs Treat Latest Practice As A Real Game

The Georgia Bulldogs went all out in their latest scrimmage of fall camp by hosting a "practice game," which they treated as a real game with officials, live kicking and substitutions. The game was set up to replicate Georgia's Week 1 opponents, the Buffalo Bulls, and ended with the Bulldogs winning 49-48.

The role of the Bulls was played by Georgia's scout team, who went up against the starters. If you're wondering why the score was so close, the scout team was spotted 35 points in the scrimmage.

The players treated this scrimmage as a real game, and they welcomed the change:

"To be honest, it was like a real game," said senior wide receiver Marlon Brown. "We left from the Butts-Mehre, went to the stadium, went to the locker room, did the team and individual warm-ups, listened to Coach Richt's speech and went out there and played. It's good because it's Georgia versus somebody else instead offense against the defense all the time."

The scrimmage was closed to the public and media, but stats were later released. Starting quarterback Aaron Murray had a big day, completing 20 of 25 passes for 253 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The hotly contested running back battle saw freshman Todd Gurley lead all backs for the third straight scrimmage, tallying 54 yards on six carries and a touchdown. Sophomore Ken Malcome added 50 yards on six carries.

The defense was led by linebackers Mike Gilliard, who had four tackles. Amarlo Herrera had three tackles and returned an interception 23 yards for a touchdown.
