Geno Auriemma Weighs In On The Departure Of Marynell Meadors

Stay connected for news and updates

The hiring of Fred Williams as Atlanta Dream head coach and general manager was announced Monday afternoon but details are scarce on the departure of Marynell Meadors. A tweet by Women's Olympic head coach and current Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma seems to suggest that the move was made because of the growing conflict with star player Angel McCoughtry.

McCoughtry missed two games last week for what was called "personal reasons" by the team. Her actions however seemed to suggest otherwise when she did not sit with her teammates in a win over the Chicago Sky. McCoughtry chose to watch that game from across the court and in front of the Sky bench. McCoughtry didn't make the team's trip to Washington but rejoined the team in time for Sunday's game against the Lynx.

It was during that game that it was reported that McCoughtry was stripped of her captaincy by the team and she came off the bench with rookie Tiffany Hayes taking her place in the starting lineup.
