Play continues into the evening at the 2012 U.S. Open in Flushing, New York. Several notables advanced with wins on Monday, including women's defending U.S. Open champion Samantha Stosur. Stosur advanced in straight sets, and No. 3 Maria Sharapova didn't run into much resistance either, defeating Melinda Czink 6-2, 6-2.

On the men's side, American James Blake advanced to the second round and No. 3 Andy Murray moved on with a straight-set win over Alex Bogomolov Jr.
Georgia native Melanie Oudin was one of the casualties on Monday -- she fell in straight sets to No. 15 Lucie Safarova. Robby Ginepri, who is also from Georgia, is currently in the third set of his match against Albert Ramos. University of Georgia alum John Isner has yet to play his first round match.
