On Tuesday, the Braves will look to win their 16th consecutive game in which Kris Medlen (5-1, 1.86 ERA in five starts) has started. The streak dates back to May 2010.
In four starts this August, Medlen is 3-0 with an ERA of just 0.65 and has averaged nearly seven innings per start. One of those starts, a complete-game, five-hit shutout, came against this same San Diego Padres squad on Aug. 16. The reasons for his success: Medlen is throwing strikes nearly 70 percent of the time and limiting opposing hitters to just a .220 batting average.
Medlen will face off against Padres lefty Andrew Werner, who earned a win in his major-league debut Aug. 22 against Pittsburgh. Werner went six innings, allowing four hits and walking four but limiting the Pirates to just two earned runs. Werner posted a 3.46 ERA in 47 minor league starts and got nearly three times as many ground ball outs as fly ball outs.
