The Falcons have cut ties with veteran backup Chris Redman and added Luke McCown into the mix at backup QB.

The Atlanta Falcons have reportedly cut longtime backup quarterback Chris Redman and signed veteran Luke McCown to the roster, according to a release on the team's official website. Jay Adams broke the news via Twitter:

This move comes just days after the team cut former third-string quarterback John Parker Wilson, leaving just Redman and undrafted rookie Dominique Davis as the only two backups on the roster. Redman's poor performance this preseason and in limited time last season likely led to this cut.

McCown, another ex-Jaguar that has made his way to Atlanta, brings some familiarity to Dirk Koetter's offense with him, and provides at least a slight upgrade over Redman as the team's primary backup QB. That much is clear.

What is not clear, however, is what the team plans to do with Davis. They could potentially keep three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster (Ryan, McCown, and Davis) or let Davis spend 2012 on the practice squad. However, if the team chooses practice squad, the Falcons risk letting another team sign him away from Atlanta.

Expect both McCown and Davis to see a significant amount of playing in Thursday night's preseason finale against Jacksonville.
