2012 U.S. Open: Andy Roddick Advances In Straight Sets

American Andy Roddick cruised in his first round match at the 2012 U.S. Open, defeating fellow American Rhyne Williams in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

Playing in Arthur Ashe Stadium, the 2003 U.S. Open champion easily dispatched the 21-year-old Williams, serving 20 aces on the day and holding serve the entire match. Roddick broke Williams early in each of the final two sets, and was never in real danger to fall to Williams, the runner-up in the NCAA's 2011 men's tennis championship.

The match offered a big learning experience for Williams, the 289th ranked player in the world, who entered the field as a qualifier and earned $23,000 for his time in Flushing Meadows.

The 29-year-old Roddick, who is the 20th overall seed in this year's tournament, will play either Bernard Tomic of Australia or Carlos Berlocq of Argentina in the second round.
