Andy Murray and David Ferrer both advanced in the 2012 U.S. Open on Wednesday, highlighting a full day of action in the tennis tournament. Murray, the No. 3 seed, beat Ivan Dodig in straight sets, and fourth-seeded Ferrer dispatched Kevin Anderson to advance in the men's singles draw. In women's singles action, top seed Victoria Azarenka defeated Kirsten Flipkens, and No. 3 seed Maria Sharapova advanced with a win over Lourdes Dominguez Lino.
The Atlanta area has a number of representatives at the U.S. Open. Wednesday saw Atlanta resident Irina Falconi advance in the women's doubles bracket, as she and partner Maria Sanchez defeated Mathilde Johansson and Alexandra Cadantu. Marietta native and resident Melanie Oudin also found success in the women's doubles draw, teaming with Grace Min to defeat Carla Suarez Navarro and Silvia Soler-Espinosa.
