The Braves lead the race for the final two Wild Card spots, but their chances in the N.L. East are fading.

Much of the leadup into Sunday's meeting between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Atlanta Braves focused on Atlanta's three-game losing streak and its inopportune timing. When Braves starter Paul Maholm's proved ineffective through two-plus innings pitched, it looked as if the Braves' streak was headed for four.
But a late-inning comeback highlighted by Chipper Jones's walk-off homer put Braves fans at ease for the night, including the guys over at Talking Chop.
Chipper Jones is some kind of amazing.
With two outs in the ninth, Chipper launched a Jonathan Papelbon fastball deep into the Atlanta night to complete another amazing comeback, dropping the Phillies 8-7.
... The win capped off what was a miserable outing for Paul Maholm.
Also make sure to check out the post for Braves radio announcer Jim Powell's call of the homer and make sure to stick around for him to proclaim "it is party time in Atlanta."

Chipper Jones still has some magic left in him.
With two men on and two outs out, Jones hit a dramatic walk-off HR to power the Atlanta Braves past the Philadelphia Phillies in a come from behind 8-7 win.
The Braves entered the inning down 7-3. Jonathan Papelbon, the closer whom the Phillies had given a massive contract to in the off-season, was brought in after Jeremy Horst allowed two base-runners.
But Papelbon didn't have any of his Boston magic with him tonight, throwing 12 of his 20 pitches for strikes while blowing the save.
Atlanta was in such bad shape because Paul Maholm, their mid-season trade acquisition, had his worst start since coming over from the Chicago Cubs.
Maholm only lasted two innings, giving up six hits and seven earned runs while throwing 72 pitches. The Phillies batters hit six doubles in the game, with Ryan Howard knocking in two RBI's and Erik Katz getting three of his own.

The Braves are trailing the Phillies 7-3 after seven innings. Philly jumped out to an early 5-0 lead over Atlanta in the first inning, so the Braves have been trying to climb out of a hole ever since.
Ryan Howard and Erik Kratz plated the five runs in the first inning with RBI doubles. Howard doubled deep to left field to score Kevin Frandsen and Chase Utley. Then Kratz hit a double to shallow right field, which scored Howard, Ty Wigginton and John Mayberry.
The Braves scored in the second inning on Frandsen's throwing error and later on hits from Reed Johnson. Braves pitcher Paul Maholm made an early exit, since the Phillies were having their way with him.

As the Braves try to avoid a September swoon for the second consecutive season, Fredi Gonzalez is doing much more lineup shuffling to try and get his team favorable matchups against opposing pitchers. Sunday's lineup against Philadelphia lefthander Cole Hamels saw Jason Heyward hitting sixth and Martin Prado at second in place of Dan Uggla.
Uggla like most players isn't very happy when his name is not on the lineup card and he talked about it with MLB.com's Mark Bowman.
"I hit a two-run homer off (Hamels) in the last game last year to put us up," Uggla said. "It's not a numbers thing for me, especially in September. It doesn't make any sense to me at all...Nobody agrees with not playing. It's just because I know what I can do, especially in September when I've been there before in big-game situations, especially last year. It's frustrating to say the least."
According to Bowman, Uggla voiced his displeasure with Gonzalez in a meeting but to no avail. Uggla has safely in each of Atlanta's last five games and has two homers in that span but is a career .145 hitter against Hamels.

With the Braves trying to avoid a sweep to the Phillies, Fredi Gonzalez has juggled his lineup slightly, dropping Jason Heyward to the No. 6 spot in the order behind catcher David Ross. Since June 2, Heyward is hitting just .225 against left-handed pitching. Dan Uggla and Brian McCann are both getting the day off on Sunday. Martin Prado will play second base with Reed Johnson taking over in left field.

Paul Maholm and Cole Hamels face off at Turner Field on Sunday as the Braves look to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of the sub-.500 Phillies. After a five-run output Friday, Atlanta managed just one run Saturday and will need to find a way to score if the ball is not flying out of the park.
Speaking of home runs: all 10 runs Maholm (11-9, 3.44 ERA) has allowed in his first five starts with Atlanta have come by way of the long ball. He allowed just two runs in 6.2 innings his last outing against San Diego.
Hamels (14-6, 2.99 ERA) posted a 1.86 ERA in five August starts and will be working on nine days' rest after missing his last start with stomach issues.
The Braves acquired utility man Jeff Baker in a trade with Detroit on Friday night, and he'll join Peter Moylan, Lyle Overbay, J.C. Boscan and Jose Constanza in Atlanta on September's expanded roster.

Tim Hudson could not keep the Philadelphia Phillies at bay, as the Braves starter struggled through five full innings of work against Philadelphia at Turner field en route to a 5-1 loss.
In relief for Tim Hudson worked Luis Avilan, Peter Moylan, and Miguel Batista, who combined to hold the Phillies scoreless from the 6th inning on. Still, without run support, it would not be enough.
Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley had good days at the plate for the Phillies. Rollins was 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the third, and Utley went 1-4 with a double and an RBI.
Atlanta attempted a comeback in the bottom of the eighth, with a Martin Prado solo home run making things interesting, but could not find the offense to secure a win.
Cliff Lee earned the win for Philadelphia, going seven full innings of scoreless baseball on five hits.
Atlanta takes on Philadelphia tomorrow at 5:05 PM Eastern. Cole Hamels (14-6, 2.99 ERA) will start for Philly against Paul Maholm (11-9, 3.44 ERA) of the Braves.

The Atlanta Braves added four players to the roster on Saturday in their first wave of September call-ups. The team added veteran first baseman Lyle Overbay, relief pitcher Peter Moylan, catcher J.C. Boscan and outfielder Jose Costanza.
Moylan makes his return to the majors after undergoing shoulder surgery last October. It was his third major surgical procedure in the past five years as he's also gone under the knife for elbow ligament surgery (Tommy John) in 2008 and for a bulging disc which kept him out for most of last season.
Overbay, at 35-years-old, signed a minor league contract with Triple-A Gwinett on Aug. 20 and is in his 12th season in the majors.

Injured Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons was examined and X-rayed on Friday and all signs point to him have a successful recovery so far. Simmons is going to be re-examined on Sunday and it's being reported that if all goes well, he could begin is minor league rehab stint as soon as Tuesday.
Dr. Gary Lourie has cleared Simmons to begin baseball activities. Simmons is still recovering from a broken hand suffered about eight weeks ago. Just as the Atlanta Journal-Constitution pointed out, Triple-A Gwinnett's season ends on Monday so the Braves will likely send Simmons either to Single-A Lynchburg or low A Rome.
In the AJC report, it says Simmons had actually been spending the past few days taking groundballs, playing catch and some live batting practice at Gwinnett as well.
"(I stunk) in bp but feeling good," Simmons said. "Just waiting for games now. Physically I felt good. It didn't bother me at all. That's great news, and the doc said it looked good."

The Braves have away a game on Friday night, falling to the Phillies by a score of 8-5 in 10 innings. With a 5-4 lead in the ninth inning, Craig Kimbrel surrendered a solo homer to Erik Kratz that tied the game at 5-5. John Mayberry then hit a three-run blast off Cristhian Martinez in the 10th to give Philadelphia a 8-5 lead they would not relinquish.
All five of Atlanta's runs came on homers. Martin Prado and Freddie Freeman hit two-run homers in the fifth inning against Roy Halladay, giving the club a 4-1 lead at the time. The Phillies responded with a couple of bloops off Mike Minor in the top of the sixth, tying the score at 4-4. Dan Uggla then hit a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth to make if 5-4.
The Braves' bullpen held strong until the ninth when Kimbrel made a mistake with an 0-2 fastball. Three of Kimbrel's last four blown saves have come against the Phillies.
Jonathan Papelbon worked a 1-2-3 perfect frame to secure the win.
It was a very tough, frustrating loss for the Braves. The team is now 5-9 in their last 14 games.
The Atlanta Braves have traded for Jeff Baker, sending a player to be named later to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for the veteran utility player, according to a tweet from Jason Beck. Baker has been in Major League Baseball since 2005, bouncing between the Colorado Rockies, Chicago Cubs and Detroit, primarily playing first and second base.
This is Baker's second trade in a month, having started August with the Chicago Cubs before being traded to Detroit. Baker has batted .254 between the two teams, including 13 extra base hits and four home runs.

Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez announced earlier today that infielder Jack Wilson was released by the club.
Fredi just announced that the Braves have released INF Jack Wilson.
— Atlanta Braves (@Braves) August 31, 2012
Wilson, 34 and an 11-year veteran of the majors, was struggling at the plate for the playoff-contending Braves. He was batting .169 in 40 games and 71 at-bats this season and was on the disabled list for seven weeks with a dislocated pinky finger.
The move clears the way for the Braves to bring back Andrelton Simmons, who is expected to begin a rehab assignment in the minor leagues soon and rejoin the big league club after that. Simmons has been on the disabled list but was batting .296 at the time of his injury.
The Braves have Paul Janish and Tyler Pastornicky at shortstop for now until Simmons can return and be added to the mix with the expanded rosters around the league.

The Braves will take the field against NL East rival Philadelphia Friday night after a day's rest, with no surprises in the lineup card. Chipper Jones in the cleanup spot should come as no surprise with the team getting a day's rest after the west coast trip. Martin Prado is back in left field after playing five different positions on the road - first, second, third, short and left.

With the Altanta Braves hitting the home stretch of the 2012 regular season, they begin a big three-game series against the Philadelphia Philles Friday night at Turner Field.
The Braves will send out Mike Minor (7-10, 4.71 ERA), who has been excellent on the mound over the last six weeks even if his record doesn't necessarily show it. Minor has given up three earned runs or less in each of his last nine starts dating back to July 5, but has only gone 3-4 over that time.
The Phillies will counter with Roy Halladay (8-7, 3.88 ERA) who is rounding into form since returning from the disabled list on July 17. In the month of August, Hallady has won four of his five starts, giving up three earned runs or less in four of them.

Before starting their three-game set with the San Diego Padres, the Atlanta Braves had Thursday off. The Braves were certainly tuned in, however, as the Washington Nationals topped the St. Louis Cardinals 8-1, which had ramifications in both the National League Wild Card and East races.
The Braves fell to 5.5 games back of the Nationals in the NL East chase, but continue to hold the top spot in the Wild Card race in the National League, as the Cardinals fell to 3 games back of the Braves in the still playoff-bound second spot. The Pirates are 3.5 games back of the Braves, on the outside of the playoff picture looking in.
