The United States' women's soccer team will get a rematch with Japan in the gold medal final in London - a rematch not from the previous games, but from the gut-punch loss the Japanese delivered in last year's Women's World Cup. That game - where the U.S. blew two leads and missed two penalty kicks - has haunted the team for a year.
The good news for the Americans is that they've been at their best in these Olympic Games, compiling a 5-0-0 record while Japan has looked sluggish at 3-0-2, not to mention a staggering goal differential of 14-6 in favor of the United States. The US beat Japan 4-1 in a exhibition in June, the last time the two teams met.
For what it's worth: No women's team has ever followed a World Cup win with a Gold medal in the following Olympics.
