Virginia Vs. Georgia Tech 2012: Ramblin' Wreck Steamrolls Cavaliers 56-20

Georgia Tech couldn't afford to lose a second game in ACC play so early in the 2012 season. The Yellow Jackets did enough in the first quarter of Saturday afternoon's game to ensure a conference win against Virginia.

The Ramblin' Wreck scored on its first play from scrimmage, less than a minute into the game, on a 70-yard Tevin Washington pass to Zach Laskey, and took a 35-7 lead into the half. A 19-yard Michael Rocco touchdown pass to Jake McGee in the first quarter for Virginia was the only interruption in Georgia Tech dominance until the Cavaliers scored twice in fourth quarter garbage time.

Georgia Tech outgained Virginia 594-297 and outrushed the Cavs 461-98. Both teams ran 61 plays from scrimmage: the Yellow Jackets averaged 9.7 yards a snap, Virginia gained 4.9 per play.

Box Score Hero: Yellow Jackets quarterback Washington completed six of eight passes for 125 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 93 yards and three scores on 11 carries. Tailback Orwin Smith averaged 22.8 yards a carry - he took six rushes for 137 yards with one touchdown.

Rankings Ramifications: After losing their opener to Virginia Tech, the Yellow Jackets aren't likely to dent the rankings this week, even with such an impressive win.

But Did They Cover? Georgia Tech was a 10 to 11 point favorite, so the Wreck covered with ease. Most over-unders were set at 52.
