FedEx Cup Standings 2012: Snedeker Ends Golf's Playoff Chase On Top

Needing both a weekend comeback and to hold off Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy to capture the FedEx Cup, Brandt Snedeker was able to complete the feat — capturing the Tour Championship and golf's playoff title in thrilling fashion.

Snedeker, who was in fifth in the FedEx standings coming into the Tour Championship, was also just 2-under through the first two rounds of the final event of the PGA Tour season, but hard charged over the weekend to finish at a 10-under 270 for the tournament. Snedeker finished three strokes ahead of Justin Rose, who finished alone in second place.

Snedeker ends up capturing the FedEx Cup by a comfortable 1,273 points over Rory McIlroy, who finished second. Tiger Woods finished 1,437 behind Snedeker to capture third place. But only Snedeker walks away with the Cup and the $10-million check as the FedEx Cup champion.

The Tour Championship 2012: Brandt Snedeker, Justin Rose Lead After 3 Rounds Of Play

Brandt Snedeker shot a fantastic 6-under par for the third round of the Tour Championship, which vaulted him all the way to the top of the leaderboard.

Snedeker finished the third round at 8-under par for the tournament, which has him tied with Justin Rose for the lead entering the final round. Rose shot a 2-under par on Saturday.

Tiger Woods shot 3-under for the third round, bouncing back from a Friday that saw him shoot a 73. Woods is tied with a trio of other golfers at 4-under entering Sunday's play. Phil Mickelson went the other way on Saturday, as his 2-over par round saw him drop into a tie for 20th place.

2012 Tour Championship: Four Tied For Lead

Everyone is on the course at the 2012 TOUR Championship, and a pack of four golfers is setting the pace at the top. Scott Piercy, Justin Rose, Bo Van Pelt, and Matt Kuchar are all tied for the lead at -3. Despite the poor finish to the round, Piercy still finishes with an impressive 67 for the first round.

Tiger Woods is four strokes back at -1 through seven holes, and Phil Mickelson is even par through eight. Tour Championship 2012 Leaderboard: Unlikely Names At The Top

With nearly all golfers on the course, some unlikely leaders are at the front of the pack at The TOUR Championship. Three Americans -- Scott Piercy, Ryan Moore, and Bo Van Pelt -- are at 2-under, along with Lee Westwood. The majority of the golfers are still on the front nine at East Lake. You can see the full tournament leaderboard here, and the full FedEx Cup standings here.

With the exception of Westwood, it's an unlikely group of early leaders as far as the world rankings and FedEx Cup standings are concerned.

Piercy: 51 (ranking), 30 (FedEx)
Moore: 63, 28
Van Pelt: 25, 19
Westwood: 4, 8

Justin Rose and Jim Furyk are one stroke back at 1-under, and everyone else is either at even par or over par. Luke Donald is the current low man on the board at 2-over.

2012 TOUR Championship: TV Schedule, Tee Times, Pairings For Thursday

The TOUR Championship tees off Thursday morning at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. The event will determine the winner of the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup playoff. 30 golfers will participate, and all of them have at least a mathematical chance to win the FedEx Cup based on their performance this weekend.

The headline pairing for the first day of the tournament includes Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods. The twosome tees off at 1:55PM ET. Both men could win the FedEx Cup with a victory, but McIlroy has more wiggle room than Woods.

McIlory currently sits first in the FedEx Cup standings, and it's been projected that he would have a "reasonable chance of winning" the FedEx Cup if he finishes in the top five in the TOUR Championship. Woods would more likely need to win or finish in the top three, and have McIlroy falter.

Masters champion Bubba Watson tees off at 1:05 in a pairing with Sergio Garcia. Watson would need a high finish and poor performances by a number of the current leaders to have a viable shot at winning the FedEx Cup.

Here are tee times for Thursday's opening round at The TOUR Championship:

Time Players
11:35 am John Senden Scott Piercy
11:45 am Rickie Fowler Ryan Moore
11:55 am Webb Simpson John Huh
12:05 pm Hunter Mahan Justin Rose
12:15 pm Adam Scott Ernie Els
12:25 pm Bo Van Pelt Robert Garrigus
12:35 pm Carl Pettersson Jim Furyk
12:45 pm Luke Donald Matt Kuchar
12:55 pm Steve Stricker Keegan Bradley
1:05 pm Bubba Watson, Sergio Garcia
1:15 pm Zach Johnson Jason Dufner
1:25 pm Dustin Johnson Lee Westwood
1:35 pm Brandt Snedeker Louis Oosthuizen
1:45 pm Nick Watney Phil Mickelson
1:55 pm Rory McIlroy Tiger Woods

Thursday's TV coverage can be found on The Golf Channel starting at 1 p.m. and runs until 6 p.m.
