Falcons Vs. Chiefs: Luke McCown Rushes To Learn New Offense

As Luke McCown gets settled with the Atlanta Falcons after signing with the team last week, he is in a race against time to learn the playbook before the Falcons' season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

In an interview with Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, McCown talks about the differences he noticed in the schemes between Atlanta and Jacksonville, where current Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter coached before moving to the Falcons,

"There are some similarities. A lot of the verbiage that we use is different than we had in Jacksonville. That part of it is transitioning your mind from what you used to call it to what [starter] Matt [Ryan] likes to call it here. That shouldn’t be too much of an obstacle."

Falcons coach Mike Smith also told Vivlamore that McCown needs to learn the playbook as quickly as possible, spending time after practice to talk with the coaching staff about the small differences in the two offenses,

"There are some differences and there are some small nuances that we put in the 2012 Atlanta Falcons playbook, and they’re different than what they’ve done in the past. We’ve got to get him up to speed as quickly as possible. He’s been spending extra time with [quarterbacks] coach [Glenn] Thomas and coach Koetter. Most of the players were off [over the weekend], but we had guys that have been in here the last couple of days and I can assure you Luke has been one of them. He’s working to try and get up to speed as quickly as possible."
