I'm sure both teams will be treating this like a real game, as both have most of their starters in and most of the roster spots have probably been figured out by now. Kawakami likely won't go as far as Halladay due to arriving at camp late, but he has pitched pretty well so far to have been thrown in the fire without much prep time.
The Phillies are giving Castillo every chance they can, apparently, starting him on a daily basis ever since he was signed. The audition time is quite small, however, so it's not for certain that he will be starting at second base for the Phillies on Opening Day.
According to David O'Brien, Brooks Conrad, Brandon Hicks and Matt Young have made the 25-man roster. This is probably the best possible way to go about making the Braves bench, so you can't be disappointed in this. Congratulations to Young, who has toiled in the minors long enough and deserves this.
Matt Young on making opening-day roster at 28, after six full seasons in the minors: "I don’t have words to describe it. I don’t even know. Called my folks and didn’t get an answer. I guess it’s too early for them. I’ll try to get ‘em after the game."
"Fredi told me and I kind of blacked out, like in Old School. I kind of blacked out and couldn’t hear what he was saying."
Phillies Vs. Braves Final Score: Phillies Score Three Runs Early, Cruise To 6-1 Win
The Phillies jumped to a three-run lead after three innings and held it throughout, taking the game over the Braves, 6-1.
After a perfect first inning, Kenshin Kawakami allowed two runs in the second on three singles and a walk. Phillies starter Roy Halladay drove in the two runs on a single. Kawakami allowed another run in the third on a solo homer by Raul Ibanez.
Kawakami's final line was three runs allowed on five hits in four innings, walking one and striking out two. Many of his hits allowed were singles through holes, and he wasn't hit that hard, but he also didn't have great command of his curveball.
He did, however, fare better than Cristhian Martinez, who allowed three runs on three hits in one inning. Two of the runs came on a home run by Ryan Howard, and the other came on a RBI double by Ben Francisco. Martinez hasn't done much to earn a roster spot lately.
Jaye Chapman pitched two scoreless innings for the Braves. Eric O'Flaherty and Craig Kimbrel did the same in the final two innings.
The Braves were held scoreless by Halladay over three innings, allowing just two hits, no walks and three strikeouts. One of the hits was a double by Nate McLouth in the first, but he was left on third. The other was a single by Martin Prado in the third.
The lone run came in the fourth when the Braves loaded the bases with no outs against Michael Schwimer. Eric Hinske drove in a run on a sac fly. However, after Alex Gonzalez re-loaded the bases on a walk, J.C. Boscan popped out to second base and Freddie Freeman struck out.
The Braves managed just two more hits after the fourth, a Jason Heyward single and Boscan single. The Braves had five hits total.
