Dan Uggla's Hitting Streak Ends At 33 Games

Dan Uggla may have set the all-time record for the Atlanta Braves hit streak, but it ended on Sunday afternoon after going 0-for-3 with a sacrifice fly.

With runners on first and third and one out in the first, Uggla hit a shallow fly ball to left field. Alfonso Soriano made a running catch to record the out, but the run scored from third. Uggla's second at-bat resulted in a high fastball being popped up on the infield and it was squeezed by first baseman Carlos Pena.

The heartbreaker came in the third at-bat. Uggla hit a bloop to right field that the wind got a hold of. With the ball carrying farther and farther away from both of the Cubs defenders, second baseman Darwin Barney made an incredible diving catch to rob Uggla of a 34-game hitting streak.

The fourth at-bat came and went without incident as the second baseman grounded a ball weakly to Starlin Castro before being thrown out at first base.

The Braves had a glimmer of hope in the ninth inning with the team trailing 6-5, but Martin Prado popped out in foul territory with Uggla stuck in the hole.

Congratulations on the streak, Dan. It was pretty incredible.

Stay tuned to SB Nation Atlanta for an article in the coming days on just how special the hitting streak was.

Dan Uggla Extends Hitting Streak To 33 Games

Dan Uggla didn't waste any time in his quest for history as the Atlanta second baseman extended his hitting streak to 33 games with a first inning single off of Cubs starter Randy Wells on Saturday. By singling in his first at bat of the evening, Uggla avoids the late inning pressure to extend the streak.

Uggla came to the plate with two outs and Freddie Freeman at first. After running the count to 1-2, Wells tried to paint an inside fast ball that had the Chicago hurler on his way to the dug out thinking he had struck out Uggla. The umpire didn't agree and Uggla singled on the next pitch.

The hit raises Uggla's average to .231 which still isn't a great number until you consider the struggles that he went through during the early part of the season.

Dan Uggla Sets All-Time Atlanta Record With 32 Game Hitting Streak

Dan Uggla now has the longest hitting streak in Atlanta Braves history -- not Braves history, mind you, but Atlanta Braves history. Tommy Holmes holds the franchise mark at 37.

Can you believe it? The player who was mired in a three month slump now has the longest streak in more than 40 years and did so with a solo-home run in the second inning of Friday night's game against the Chicago Cubs.

Uggla took a high 1-0 fastball and sent it into the first row of seats just to the left of the center field wall. The monster crowd of 45,000+ gave the second baseman a standing ovation as he rounded the bases.

Bobby Cox was in the booth when the streak was extended and the former-manager had nothing but great things to say about Dan. It is quite the honor to receive praise from one of the best managers of all-time.

With the Atlanta record in hand, Uggla now goes for Joe DiMaggio's record of 56-straight games with a hit. The record is 70 years old. No pressure, Dan.

Dan Uggla Ties Atlanta Braves Record With 31 Game Streak

Dan Uggla is now tied with Rico Carty for the longest hitting streak in Atlanta Braves history. With runners on second and third in the first inning, Uggla smashed a first pitch fastball back up the middle to drive in two runs and continue his hitting streak. For a player who had kept it alive with back-to-back games with an infield single, it was good to see our slugging second baseman hit a ball well.

Uggla will have to wait until Friday night to go for the all-time Atlanta record. The team will face the Chicago Cubs at Turner Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:35, though it'll be delayed. It's Bobby Cox Night. Tickets are going fast so if you plan on attending the game you should act quickly.

Stay tuned to SB Nation Atlanta for complete coverage of Dan Uggla and his pursuit of the all-time baseball record held by Joe DiMaggio. For more Braves coverage, be sure to check out the folks over at Talking Chop.

Dan Uggla Extends Hitting Streak To 30 Games

Dan Uggla has now recorded a hit in 30 straight games. After going hitless in his first two at-bats on Wednesday night, Uggla hit a sharp grounder to Marlins shortstop Emilio Bonifacio in the fifth inning. Despite Bonifacio reaching the ball in time to attempt a throw to first base, Uggla was hustling down the line the entire way and beat the throw with relative ease.

The scattered Braves fans in the crowd of 4,000 or so at Sunlife Stadium cheered as he moved one step closer to both the Braves and Major League record. He trails Rico Carty by just one game to be tied for the all-time lead among Atlanta Braves and is 26 away from overtaking Joe DiMaggio and his 70-year old record.
