No, the Home Run Derby wasn't held on Wednesday afternoon in the Bronx, but both the Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees did their best to replicate the event. Jason Heyward led the Braves with two home runs, while Martin Prado, David Ross and Freddie Freeman added home runs of their own, fueling the Braves to a 10-5 win.
Both Heyward and Freeman had three RBIs.
Four of the home runs the Braves hit came off of Yankees starter Phil Hughes, who lasted just four and a third innings, giving up six runs on six hits, while striking out five.
Not to be outdone, Braves starter Tommy Hanson surrendered four homers of his own. Derek Jeter belted a lead-off homer in the first before Eric Chavez added a homer of his own in the fifth inning. Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano hit back-to-back homers off of Hanson in the sixth. Luckily for Hanson, all of New York's homers were solo jobs.
Hanson's final line is certainly nothing to write home about, as he lasted five plus innings, giving up four runs on five hits, while striking out five and walking two. Still, it was enough to earn himself a win.
Jonny Venters, Chad Durbin, Eric O'Flaherty and Kris Medlen each pitched an inning in relief.
Atlanta will now head up to Boston, where they'll open up a three-game series with the Red Sox on Friday.

The Braves' 4-3 win on Tuesday broke both the Yankee's 10-game overall winning streak, and their four straight wins over Atlanta dating back to last week's sweep of Atlanta at Turner Field. Tommy Hanson will go to the hill for Atlanta in the Bronx rubber match, looking to regain control after issuing six walks in 5 and 1/3 innings in a 4-2 win over the Orioles Friday.
Chipper Jones is expected to move to designated hitter for Wednesday's game. In 27 career games as a DH, Jones is hitting .257 with seven home runs.

Andrelton Simmons went 2-for-4 with two RBIs as the Braves took the second game of the series against the Yankees by a 4-3 score.
Tim Hudson got the start and gave up three runs (two earned) over five innings. Hudson allowed just four hits and struck out five, but also walked five.
The Yankees opened the scoring in the second on a two-RBI double from Nick Swisher in the bottom of the second. Simmons drove in a run on a groundout in the following frame. In the fourth, Chipper Jones tied the game with a double, and Simmons gave the Braves a 3-2 lead with an RBI-single. New York tied the game on a fielding error by Jones in the bottom of the fourth.
In the sixth, Jason Heyward beat out an infield single with two outs, allowing Brian McCann to score what would end up as the winning run. Craig Kimbrel pitched a perfect ninth to record the save.

The Braves have failed to beat the Yankees in four tries this season, and on Tuesday they will try to defeat Hiroki Kuroda, who is 2-4 against Atlanta in his career.
The only major change in Tuesday's lineup for Fredi Gonzalez is that Freddie Freeman is back in there.
The lineups are:

Atlanta Braves pitcher Livan Hernandez had been designated for assignment by the team. On Tuesday, according to the official Braves transactions page on the team website, the veteran has been given his unconditional release.
The page mentions that the veteran has no intention of retiring, despite being released by the Houston Astros in March and by the Braves this week. Although he may have difficulty finding a third team to land with this season, it is not out of the question that someone would want to take a look at Hernandez.
This has been quite a year for veterans looking to be given a chance with an MLB team. Hernandez joins Jamie Moyer, Vladimir Guerrero, Manny Ramirez and Miguel Tejada, among others, as former All-Stars looking to continue their careers with anyone who will take them.

It's been a while since anybody defeated the Yankees and the Braves are just the latest victims of New York's assault, which now includes 10 straight wins. The Braves look to even things up with Bombers an Yankee Stadium on Tuesday.
Tim Hudson (4-3, 3.90 ERA) will take the mound for Atlanta, while facing Hiroki Kuroda (6-6, 3.43 ERA) in the pitchers' duel. The Yankees have played well all around between having the hottest hitting in baseball, along with pitching and defense that's not giving up a lot of runs on a night-to-night basis.

Many feared the worst when Brandon Beachy left Saturday's game in the fourth inning with an elbow injury. Those fears were realized on Monday when an MRI exam revealed that Beachy had a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow which usually would require ligament replacement surgery (Tommy John) and 12-14 months of rehab.
Brandon Beachy has been diagnosed with a partial tear of the UCL. He will see a Braves doctor tomorrow and Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday.

The next course of action is for Beachy to get some second opinions on the diagnosis and will visit Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday. In the short term Atlanta will recall Jair Jurrjens from Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday to to take Beachy's place in the rotation against the Red Sox.

Mike Minor gave up four earned runs over 5 2/3 innings as the Braves dropped the series-opener to the Yankees, falling 6-2 in New York on Monday night.
Michael Bourn lead the Braves at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored, while catcher David Ross went 2-for-3.
The Braves opened the scoring in the first on an RBI-groundout from Martin Prado to score Bourn. In the fifth, Bourn singled home another run to double Atlanta's lead. But the Yankees scored three in the bottom frame on a ground-rule double from Russell Martin and a single from Derek Jeter. The Yankees tacked on a run in each of the next three innings, including solo home runs from Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano.

Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman was able to grip a bat with his injured left index finger on Monday and is hoping to be in Tuesday's lineup, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.
Freeman injured the finger on June 6 when he was sliding into the second and the double-play throw from Marlins' Jose Reyes hit Freeman. Freeman played in five of the next six games, going 4-for-18 before deciding the discomfort was too much. Monday was the fifth consecutive start Freeman missed.
From the AJC:
"It looks good," (Freeman) said. "I swung off the tee today and everything. There’s still a little pain, but it’s playable pain. They told me I’m going to have to play through it the rest of this year. But it’s to the point where I can play…. Hopefully it’ll be good to go tomorrow. This is the best it’s felt [since the injury]. I can even make a fist now; I couldn’t do that two days ago."

While the Braves wait for the MRI results on Brandon Beachy's right elbow, Braves general manager Frank Wren is not exactly expecting the best of news.
Beachy was placed on the 15-day DL on Sunday. There is some fear that Beachy, who is 5-5 with a 2.00 ERA, may have torn his ulnar collateral ligament, which usually requires Tommy John Surgery. Manager Fredi Gonzalez is hoping it's just bone spurs, but Wren didn't have the same optimism. From the Atlanta Journal Constitution:
"Not necessarily," the GM said. "Until you get a firm idea, I think we just have to wait and see. These things, you kind of have a sense of it when they happen, what the likelihood is of it being serious. It’s kind of hard to be real optimistic….
"Until we get the final reading and the doctors examine him, I can’t speculate."
