Braves Win Series Over Marlins Behind Tommy Hanson's Weird Day

Tommy Hanson did something on Wednesday that has not been done in nearly 75 years. Hanson worked five innings of one-run ball, but he probably should have given up 10 runs if his line was any indication. He walked seven batters and allowed seven steals, but came up time and time again with big pitches when he needed them most.

The tall righty and a great performance from Kris Medlen led the Braves to a 7-1 win over the struggling Marlins in Miami.

Juan Francisco was the big story for the day. Making a start for the resting Chipper Jones, Francisco went 3-for-4 with a monster two-run homer. Michael Bourn hit a two-run homer of his own. Jason Heyward ambushed a ball the opposite way for a homer, his 15th of the season.

Jonny Venters worked a perfect ninth inning, a very encouraging sign of things to possibly come. His sinker was in the zone and down, something seldom achieved by the southpaw during the first half of the season.

The Braves will have an off-day on Thursday before returning home to begin a 10-game home stand that will begin with the suddenly-hot Phillies. It'll be Ben Sheets against Cole Hamels in the series opener.

Braves Vs. Marlins Preview: Wednesday Game Time, TV Info And More

After their victory Tuesday night, the Atlanta Braves will try to take the rubber game of their three game series against the Miami Marlins this afternoon at the new Marlins Stadium.

Tommy Hanson (10-5, 4.50 ERA) will take the mound for the Braves, looking to bounce back from his worst two starts of the season. Hanson has given up a combined 17 hits and 14 earned runs in 9-1/3 innings. While the Braves won both games, Hanson saw his ERA almost go up a point from 3.71 to 4.50.

Miami will counter with Ricky Nolasco (8-8, 4.55 ERA), who has lost his last two starts. In his last time out against the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 20, Nolasco gave up eight hits and four earned runs in six innings of work.

The Marlins will also be without Hanley Ramirez, who was traded last Tuesday night to the Los Angeles Dodgers for two prospects.

Braves Vs. Marlins: Hudson Strong In 4-3 Win

Tim Hudson gave up three earned runs over seven innings and the Braves came back for a 4-3 over the Marlins on Tuesday in Miami.

The Braves scored one in the opening frame on a sac fly from Jason Heyward, but the Marlins answered with three over the next two frames. A bases-loaded walk to Freddie Freeman in the third and a sac fly from Martin Prado in the fourth tied the game.

Heyward singled home Prado in the seventh for what would become the winning run. Heyward finished 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs, while, Prado went 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored.

Eric O'Flaherty pitched a scoreless eighth and Craig Kimbrel pitched a scoreless ninth for his 29th save.

Braves Vs. Marlins Preview: Tuesday Game Time, TV Info And More

The Braves are trying to trade for Ryan Dempster, which is obviously a good thing. But until that move can really be confirmed, this team is going the wrong way. After missing a prime opportunity to position itself toward the top of the NL East against the Nationals, Atlanta dropped the series opener against the struggling Miami Marlins.

Fortunately for the Braves, Tim Hudson takes the mound on Tuesday. They could sure use him. In the team's three-game losing streak, they've scored just four runs while batting .181. Mark Buerhle (9-9, 3.29 ERA) will start for the Marlins.

Braves Drop Series Opener Against Josh Johnson, Marlins

The Braves continued to struggle against Josh Johnson on Monday night, losing to the Marlins by a score of 2-0. The loss is their third in a row, and with the Nationals winning again, they now sit 4.5 games back of the division lead.

The Marlins ran into some good luck in the first inning against Minor. Jose Reyes fisted a ball into center field, and then moved into third on a perfect hit-and-run. Carlos Lee blooped a ball just over Paul Janish's glove to make it 1-0.

Emilio Bonifacio hit a solo homer in the second inning to make it 2-0. It was his first home run of the season, and the 21st time Minor has seen one of his pitches leave the park.

The Braves rallied in the ninth, but it would eventually fall short. Michael Bourn led off with a single, and he was followed by Martin Prado who also singled up the middle. Jason Heyward grounded into what should have been a fielder's choice groundout, but an awful call from Laz Diaz ruled Heyward out at first base. Fredi Gonzalez came out to argue and was ejected.

Chipper Jones came up with two outs and singled home Bourn to make it 2-1. Freddie Freeman battled in his final at-bat, but he ended the game with a shallow pop fly to center field.

The two teams will meet again on Tuesday night at 7:10 EST.

Braves Vs. Marlins Preview: Game Time, TV Info And More

The Braves, just a few games back out of the NL East lead, will be in Miami for the next few days to play a struggling Marlins team. The Braves have to be frustrated at this point, since they dropped their last two games against the division-leading Washington Nationals over the weekend.

It was a prime position to move themselves closer toward the lead, but the Nationals weren't having it. Going against the Marlins could help the Braves' cause, though. The Marlins are losers of five straight, and seven of their last 10 games. Mike Minor (5-6, 5.69 ERA) will face Josh Johnson (5-7, 4.35 ERA) in the pitcher's duel.
