The Chicago Cubs plan to keep Ryan Dempster through the 2012 season according to Buster Olney of ESPN.
Dempster was linked to both the Atlanta Braves and the Los Angeles Dodgers as the trade deadline approached, but after a proposed deal to send Dempster to the Braves fell through, all progress on a trade by either team has ground to a halt. According to Olney, GM Theo Epstein will make a qualifying offer to Dempster and if he is signs with another team, the Cubs will receive a compensatory draft pick between the first and second rounds.
With Dempster out of the picture, the Braves have shifted their focus to Milwaukee Brewers starter Zack Greinke. Greinke has been excellent for the Brewers this year, going 9-3 with a 3.44 ERA.
