MLB Standings 2012: Braves Lead Race For Wild Card Spots

The Braves lead the race for the final two Wild Card spots, but their chances in the N.L. East are fading.

The Braves are in the top spot of the race for the final two playoff spots in the National League with 28 games to play in the 2012 season. Atlanta sits 3.5 games ahead of the Dodgers, who are a half-game behind the Cardinals for the last berth.

The two Wild Card teams will face each other in a one-game playoff before the Division Series begins.

Chances to make up ground in the N.L. East are fading fast. The division-leading Washington Nationals stumbled to a 4-6 record in their last 10 games, but the Braves did the same over that span. The Nats currently hold a 6.5 game lead over Atlanta.

Winning the division would be the preferred scenario, as it assures homefield advantage in the Division Series and would allow the Braves to avoid the uncertainty of a one-game winner-take-all scenario.
