A Preseason Of Injuries: Falcons Have Depth Questions On Both Lines

Though it is often the case with many teams around the league, the Falcons have had their fair share of bad luck when it comes to preseason injuries.

Already down rookie FB Bradie Ewing, head coach Mike Smith made it known to reporters on Monday that offensive tackle Will Svitek will also be out for the season after suffering what has been called an arm injury.

Couple that with Smith's statement that "no firm timetable" has been set in regards to injured DT Corey Peters, and all of a sudden the Falcons look a little thin at two positions that could use some help in the depth department.

Smith has made it clear that the team likely won't sign anyone to replace Svitek. But is it time to panic?

The good news, at least for the time being, is that Peria Jerry has looked really good throughout the first two weeks of the preseason. A disappointment thus far, perhaps there's still a chance that Jerry continues to step up and at least partially live up to his former first-round billing.

Rookie Travian Robertson has also shined in limited preseason action, and hopefully Vance Walker has recovered from his undisclosed injury suffered earlier in camp. Plus, the Peters injury should hopefully only keep him out of a few early regular season games at worst.

All in all, defensive tackle should be okay. But Svitek's absence is much more concerning.

Sam Baker is presumably healthier than last season, but behind him lies only third-round pick Lamar Holmes, who has yet to play a snap in any game, exhibition or otherwise. Holmes himself missed time in camp after suffering a foot injury during the offseason.

The only other backup tackle on the roster is Mike Johnson, a guard at heart, and he hasn't exactly shown a penchant for being healthy either.

The line looked a little shaky against Cincinnati, too, and for all the praise Matt Ryan has drawn this preseason, I would hate to see the Falcons suffer another Bears-esque loss in the season opener. We know from last season that offensive line is not a problem that solves itself quickly.

For now, we'll have to stick it out with Baker and hope that Holmes shows us something positive in this week's preseason matchup with this Dolphins, where he is expected to receive "significant playing time." Stay tuned.
