Sancho Lyttle Rejoins Atlanta Dream, Kelly Mazzante Waived

The Atlanta Dream today announced that All-Star forward Sancho Lyttle has rejoined the team after missing the last six games while participating with the Spanish National Team in the Eurobasket Women 2011 Tournament.

In four games with Atlanta this season, Lyttle is averaging 12.5 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Lyttle played in six games with the Spanish National Team averaging 11.7 points and 5.3 rebounds. Spain finished 2-3 and failed to capture a medal for the first time since 2001.

To make room for Lyttle on the roster, Atlanta waived guard Kelly Mazzante who appeared in six games while averaging 5.7 minutes per contest. Mazzante was supposed to provide some long distance shooting for the Dream but was struggling to get time in a crowded backcourt and was just 1 for 12 on the season from three point range.

Courtney Paris is the big winner with all of the moves that Atlanta has made. She was signed by the Dream when Lyttle first left the team and has had a big impact averaging 8.4 points and 7.0 rebounds in five games.

Lyttle is expected to return to action for Atlanta once the team's medical staff has evaluated her and cleared her to play.

Atlanta Dream Add Courtney Paris, Veteran Center, To Roster

In a move made possible by Sancho Lyttle's return to the Spanish National Team, the Atlanta Dream announced the signing of center Courtney Paris. Paris is a former star at Oklahoma and most recently played with the Sacramento Monarchs in 2009 where she averaged 4.8 points and 4.1 rebounds while appearing in 33 games. Most recently she was in training camp with the Los Angeles Sparks but was waived prior to the start of the season.

Paris was the seventh overall selection by Sacramento in the 2009 WNBA Draft. She helped lead Oklahoma to the Final Four as a senior and became the first collegiate player, male or female, to total more than 2,500 points and 2,000 rebounds in a career. She was a four time All-American selection while playing for the Sooners.

Paris will provide depth to the Atlanta front line. Alison Bales made her first start of the season in Lyttle's absence and Sandora Irvin saw an increase in playing time as well.

Atlanta Dream Forward Sancho Lyttle Leaves Team To Play With Spanish National Team

Atlanta Dream forward Sancho Lyttle has temporarily left the team to play with the Spanish National team in the Eurobasket Women 2011 tournament. Lyttle missed Atlanta's road loss in Minnesota on Friday and will miss the Dream's next five games. She is expected to rejoin the club on July 9 against Chicago.

The Eurobasket Women 2011 tournament is the European women's championship and is a qualifying tournament for the 2012 Olympics. Lyttle helped Spain to a bronze medal finish in the 2010 FIBA World Championships for Women.

Even though Lyttle's absence was expected, it really couldn't come at a worse time for the Dream who have stumbled out of the gate to a 1-4 start. Atlanta has struggled defensively even with Lyttle in the lineup and her absence will not make things any easier. Lyttle is averaging 12.5 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 3.0 steals this season.

While she is gone, Lyttle will be temporarily placed on the suspended list.
