Suns Vs. Hawks Final Score: Atlanta Drops Third Straight 99-90

The Atlanta Hawks saw their losing streak extended to three games with a 99-90 loss to the Phoenix Suns Monday night at Philips Arena.

Atlanta's reserves made a valiant effort in the fourth quarter but the reality is that this game was over long before they ever checked into the game. Phoenix outscored the Hawks 29-16 in the third quarter to extend a seven point lead to a 20 point lead heading to the fourth.

Atlanta never did solve the Suns' zone defense and struggled offensively to get good looks at the basket in rhythm. Atlanta connected on just 39 percent of its shots and was just 6-24 from three-point range. Josh Smith led the way with 18 points and five rebounds while Joe Johnson added 17 points of his own. Willie Green added 14 points off the bench with 12 coming in the final quarter when the reserves went on a run to make the lead respectable.

Atlanta's defense didn't fare much better than its offense as Phoenix hit on 51 percent of its shots in the game and hit 11 threes. Steve Nash did a lot of scoring early and then settled for setting up his teammates. Nash finished with 24 points and 11 assists including 4-4 shooting from beyond-the-arc. Channing Frye added 19 points while Jared Dudley and Michael Redd finished with 10 each.

Atlanta will close out its current home stand on Wednesday with a matchup against the Indiana Pacers.

Hawks Schedule 2012: Three Potential Playoff Foes Up Next For Atlanta

The Atlanta Hawks will have a great opportunity to assess where they currently stand in the Eastern conference as games versus Indiana, Orlando and Miami are up next for Larry Drew's bunch. Atlanta is currently 16-8 on the season and sit in the No. 5 spot in the conference standings.

One bit of concern for the Hawks has been the depth of their big men, more specially the lack thereof, as Al Horford's injury could have him out for the remainder of the season. Moreover, with the recent injury to Jason Collins, the Hawks have leaned heavily on Zaza Pachulia with no real center able to step in during the interim. Coach Drew says there's not any immediate movement on the horizon:

"Not a whole lot of news," Drew said of the team’s pursuit of a big man. "Right now we are going as we are. We are a little small but we’ll just have to play the hand that’s dealt to us."

The Hawks get back into the swing of things with the Suns Monday night, then face Indiana on Wednesday night.

Suns Vs. Hawks: Josh Smith Talks Ball Movement

While Atlanta Hawks coach Larry Drew focused in on his team's defensive shortcomings of late, power forward Josh Smith has his own theory about Atlanta's recent struggles offensively.

"I think that defense is definitely the key to winning basketball games but if we don't have any continuity on the offensive end it really definitely hurts us. When the ball sticks on one floor we get baited into playing one-on-one basketball. That's what hurts this basketball team because when we are sharing the basketball, moving it from side to side, everybody is benefitting off goods shots, I think we help each other that much more on the defensive end."

Although Atlanta has still had a high number of assists during their two game losing streak, things have gotten tougher on the offensive end of the floor. Smith didn't name any of his teammates but Joe Johnson's name comes to mind among Hawks fans when the term isolation comes up. However, Smith stopped short of naming names and the comments will simply serve as a backdrop for tonight's game against the Suns.
