NBA Power Rankings: Hawks Placed In The No. 10 Spot

It seems to be a consensus that the Atlanta Hawks' success depends on whether or not Al Horford will be able to return to the lineup and have any sort of serious impact. The Hawks have just enough, though, to be ranked 10th in the latest SB Nation NBA Power Rankings.

The San Antonio Spurs are No. 1 in the rankings after winning seven straight games and soaring to the top of the Western Conference standings. Right behind the Spurs are the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat.

Here is what Tom Ziller had to say about the Hawks, who just fell to the New York Knicks 113-112 on Sunday:

"This team becomes a legit threat to make the conference finals if Al Horford returns by the second round and Derrick Rose is actually banged up enough to be limited in the postseason. Of course, to get to that second round, Atlanta needs to beat the ... (Boston Celtics)"

Knicks Vs. Hawks Final Score: Atlanta Comes Up Just Short In 113-112 Loss

The Atlanta Hawks came up just short falling to the New York Knicks 113-112 Sunday afternoon at Philips Arena in a game that was played in a playoff like atmosphere. Once again the Hawks were plagued by suspect execution down the stretch as they failed to get a good look at the basket on several of their final possessions.

Marvin Williams had a big day in his return to the starting lineup and got the call on the last play of the game for the Hawks. However, Williams driving shot attempt at the rim didn't beat the final horn and secured the win for the Knicks.

Williams led the Hawks with 29 points on 10-15 shooting and also grabbed 11 rebounds. Jeff Teague added 23 points, six assists and five steals while Joe Johnson added 22 points. Josh Smith finished with 14 points and five boards for the Hawks.

Carmelo Anthony carried the Knicks offense with 39 points on 14-32 shooting. Amare Stoudemire was solid as well finishing with 22 points and 12 boards. Landry Fields scored 12 of his 18 points in the third quarter and was 7-8 from the field in the game. Baron Davis finished with 13 points and former Georgia Tech standout Iman Shumpert added 11 for New York.

Atlanta shot 53 percent for the game and went 15-23 from beyond-the-arc. They however turned the ball over 19 times and were just 15-23 from the free throw line which is huge in a one point loss.

Knicks Vs. Hawks Score: Atlanta Leads 65-60 At Halftime Despite 20 Points From Carmelo Anthony

The Atlanta Hawks take a 65-60 advantage into halftime of their Sunday afternoon matchup with the New York Knicks. The game has been an offensive showcase for the two teams in the first half with both shooting around 60 percent from the field.

Atlanta topped 30 points in both quarters and outscored the Knicks 34-29 in the second quarter to take a five point lead into the break. Marvin Williams came up big for Atlanta early with 15 points and four rebounds hitting 5-6 shots and both of his three-point attempts. Jeff Teague hit 5-7 shots for 13 points while Joe Johnson has nine while going 5-5 from the field in the first half.

The Hawks got a boost from their second unit in the second quarter and Jannero Pargo leads all scorers off the bench with nine points on 3-3 shooting from beyond the arc.

Carmelo Anthony has been a one man wrecking crew for the Knicks piling up 20 points in the first half. Iman Shumpert and Amare Stoudemire finished with 11 points each. Stoudemire played just 10 minutes in the first half after picking up three personal fouls.

Al Horford Injury: Hawks Center Still Prepping For Playoffs Return

While Atlanta may be uncertain with the status of center Zaza Pachulia it is beginning to look a little more likely that Al Horford will be at least be available to play when the postseason begins. Horford told the AJC's Michael Cunningham that he is about 70 percent sure that he will be ready for the first round of the playoffs.

While the Hawks haven't counted on a Horford return this season its looking more and more likely that it will happen. Even if Horford is ready to go then he is likely to be phased into the Atlanta lineup slowly by coach Larry Drew.

"We would have to work him in gradually. I wouldn't want to throw him right into the fire. I know his conditioning is not very good because he's been off for so long. It would be a gradual process to get him back adjusted. It will really be how he feels. When you lay off for that long it's tough to get your legs under you."

A less than 100 percent Al Horford would still likely be a shot in the arm for the Hawks whose other center options include Jason Collins and Erick Dampier. Larry Drew has primarily used Ivan Johnson as the back up center of late but he would be well served to get some minutes at the power forward position.

Zaza Pachulia Injury: Hawks Center Remains Out With Foot Injury

Zaza Pachulia sat out his fifth straight game with a foot injury on Sunday and head coach Larry Drew is unsure when he might get his big man back in the lineup. Drew even went so far to suggest that he wasn't sure if Pachulia would be back in time for the start of the playoffs.

"I'm hoping so. He's certainly doing better than, from my understanding, what they had anticipated. There is some progress with the injury and where he is with it."

Pachulia strained a ligament in his foot in Atlanta's final matchup with Orlando. He has filled in admirably at center for the Hawks after Al Horford was lost to injury just 11 games into the season. Jason Collins has started in place of Pachulia at center but Josh Smith got the start on Sunday as the Hawks went with a small lineup against the Knicks.

Knicks Vs. Hawks: Atlanta Changing Up Starting Lineup

Atlanta Hawks coach Larry Drew is making a change to his team's starting lineup to help combat the Knicks small lineup.

New York previously announced that Tyson Chandler would not play on Sunday and that Amare Stoudemire would slide over to the center position. Marvin Williams will get the start at power forward and Josh Smith will slide over to the center position to matchup with Stoudemire.

Jason Collins had been getting the starting assignments in the wake of Zaza Pachulia's foot injury. Drew wisely opted out of a potential Collins-Stoudemire matchup on Sunday.

Knicks Vs. Hawks: Tyson Chandler Sitting Out Sunday's Game

The Atlanta Hawks have had injury issues to their center position the entire season starting with Al Horford's injury 11 games into the season and lately with Zaza Pachulia's foot injury. It looks like the Hawks will catch a break today as Knicks center Tyson Chandler is not expected to play. Amare Stoudemire will slide over to the center position.

Chandler is the vocal point of the Knicks defensive effort and their won't be any Hawks players today upset that he isn't in the lineup. Jason Collins is likely to get the start today in Zaza Pachulia's absence but Larry Drew may have to make adjustments quickly with Stoudemire at the center position.
