John Jenkins Drawing Praise With Summer League Performance

John Jenkins is turning heads with his performance at the 2012 Vegas Summer League and has landed on A.J. Mitnick's list of breakout candidates. . John Jenkins, G, Atlanta: The Hawks plan on replacing one JJ for another at under 10 percent of the cost. Jenkins may not be able to fill Joe Johnson's shoes as a leader or all-around player, but he is a better and more consistent shooter. This rookie has a knack not only for making crunch time 3-pointers, but also always seems to make shots at key momentum points. Whenever teams go on runs against the Hawks, Jenkins will knock down a bucket to keep Atlanta in the game. He can't carry an offense like Johnson, but he is an outstanding weapon to have in your arsenal.

Its interesting to point out that the three players in front of Jenkins, Golden State's Klay Thompson, Minnesota's Derrick Williams and Los Angeles' Eric Bledsoe are all from the 2011 Draft class. The bar was initially set pretty low for Jenkins as people new he could shoot but weren't positive that he could do the other things necessary to succeed in the NBA.

Jenkins has shown the same poise in summer league that he showed at Vanderbilt. He seems to always be under control and that shooting stroke helps to cover up a lot of his shortcomings.

Keith Benson, the summer squad's rebounding leader, pulled down a team-high 10 boards in the losing effort.

For the Celtics, Kris Joseph and Jared Sullinger were impressive, leading the team with 14 points. Boston rookie Fab Melo also looked good in transition, though he didn't exactly light up the stat sheet.

The Celtics actually had six players score in double figures on Monday.

NBA Summer League 2012: Hawks Fall To Spurs 82-76

The Atlanta Hawks received 20 points from Keith Benson and 13 from John Jenkins, but that was not enough as the San Antonio Spurs were able to give the Hawks their first summer league loss 82-76. The Spurs were led by the trio of Kawhi Leonard, Eric Dawson and Cory Joseph who had a combined 53 points.

Both teams got off to a slow start as the Spurs finally were the first to get on the board and that did not happen until the midway point of the first quarter, and the Hawks didn't recorded their first bucket until 4:25 left on a Brad Wanamaker jump shot. The Hawks did however have a 16-11 lead after the first quarter.

The Spurs got hot in the second quarter as they got off to a 10-0 run and made 13-of-17 shots to have six point halftime lead. In the third quarter the Hawks started out to a 10-3 run, and outscored the Spurs to make it a 60-58 game heading into the final quarter.

The teams switched once again with the Spurs starting off hot by going on a 20-10 run to ultimately defeat the Hawks.

Vegas Summer League: John Jenkins, Keith Benson Impress In 102-82 Win

The Atlanta Hawks began the summer league season in style with a 102-82 blowout win over the Washington Wizards. It was a grand debut for John Jenkins who was playing in his first action with the Hawks since being selected in the first-round of the NBA Draft out of Vanderbilt.

Jenkins finished with 19 points and four assists but most importantly for Atlanta was his 4 of 5 shooting from beyond-the-arc. Jenkins displayed outstanding range and a quick release that he showed on a couple of desperation attempts at the shot clock buzzer. In all Jenkins hit 7 of 13 shots and looked poised and in control of his surroundings.

2011 second round pick Keith Benson also had a nice debut adding 19 points and six rebounds. Benson made 9 of 12 shot attempts and was a team-best +25 while on the court. Brad Wanamaker got the start at the point and finished with 13 points and six assists while Frank Hassell came off the bench with 10 points and six boards.

Bradley Beal and Chris Singleton led the Wizards with 22 and 20 points respectively. Beal went 6 of 14 from the field but was 9 of 10 from the free throw line.

Atlanta will enjoy an off day on Saturday before hitting the court Sunday night in a matchup with the San Antonio Spurs.

NBA Summer League 2012: Brian Butch Leaves Atlanta Hawks For Milwaukee Bucks

Brian Butch didn't quite fit into the new philosophy of the Atlanta Hawks, where they rebuild with younger players and develop them through the system. So the 27-year-old former Appelton West star left the Hawks for the Milwaukee Bucks to play Summer League ball.

The Bucks' roster includes 2012 draft picks John Henson (14th overall) and Doron Lamb (42nd overall), as well as former first-round picks Larry Sanders (2010, 15th overall) and Tobias Harris (2011, 19th overall).

"They had a change in philosophy,'' Butch said today from Atlanta, where he was taking part in a Hawks' minicamp. "It was my choice. Not by any means did they kick me out of there. But I want to go somewhere where I can play and be seen. In summer league, that's what it's all about. And making sure you're going to play is the biggest thing."

"I appreciate the opportunity the Hawks were going to give me,'' Butch added. "And you do have to have a team that likes you enough to bring you in and let you play so I appreciate everything Milwaukee is doing to let me play.

"We'll see where it leads to. If you play well it can open up a bunch of doors and if not, you have to go back and evaluate and see what happens after that. But it's all about opportunities and I appreciate the opportunity Milwaukee is giving me to get out there and play.''

2012 Hawks Summer League: Jeremy Hazell Sees Opportunity In Atlanta

The trade of Joe Johnson from Atlanta to Brooklyn caught the attention of former Seton Hall standout Jeremy Hazellwho will be playing for the Hawks at the Vegas Summer League.

After a solid career at Seton Hall Hazell went undrafted Hazell played briefly in Spain and went to training camp with the Phoenix Suns. He was a participant in Atlanta's rookie camp last season right before the lockout shut down the league last summer. According to his agent Seth Cohen, Hazell has upgraded his game since leaving Seton Hall.

"Today Jeremy is an upgraded version of what he was coming out of school. He is shooting the ball better and more consistently, his body is stronger. He is more seasoned and experienced, and is more mature than he was coming out of school. I have witnessed it with my own eyes. I am very proud of his growth both off and on the court and as I have firmly believed since Day 1, there is a place for Jeremy in the league"

Larry Drew places value in shot makers which the drafting of John Jenkins indicates. If Hazell can impress at Vegas while showing a well rounded game then perhaps he will have a chance to stick with the Hawks or at least earn a training camp invite.

Atlanta Hawks Rumors: Sergiy Gladyr Could Play In Summer League

The Atlanta Hawks' Ukrainian draft pick Segiy Gladyr from 2009 might make his way to the U.S. to play for the Hawks eventually. According to reports, Atlanta has already offered to buyout his contract overseas to add shooting depth to the team for the 2012-13 season.

If confirmed in Las Vegas Gladyr his good form, the Hawks will not hesitate in taking their services quickly. The Ukrainian would clear, so, its future after reaching an agreement with the Manresa Assignia not to follow in the capital of the Bages , and embark on an exciting adventure that you had in mind the first year after being drafted, but Atlanta asked for patience seeing the potential to be further exploited.

Apparently Gladyr impressed the Hawks by averaging 14.5 points in the last eight days of this past season with the Ukrainian Manresa.

2012 NBA Summer League: Jeremy Hazell Expected To Play With Hawks

Former Seton Hall standout Jeremy Hazell is expected to take part in rookie mini-camp and then be part of the Atlanta Hawks entry in the 2012 Vegas Summer League. The Hawks are expected to host a rookie camp on July 9-12 with the summer league in Vegas beginning on July 13 and lasting through July 22.

Hazell took part in a free agent camp hosted by the Hawks last summer before being forced to seek other opportunities due to the NBA Lockout. Hazell played briefly in Spain and was in training camp with the Phoenix Suns once the lockout ended.

Given Atlanta's salary cap situation they will no doubt be looking for cheap and affordable talent which makes their rookie mini-camp and summer league entry that much more important. Hazell is a 6-foot-5 shooting guard that was a good scorer in college averaging just under 20 points per game during his senior year at Seton Hall.
