Winnipeg NHL Team To Be Named The Jets, According To Report

The former Atlanta Thrashers will soon become the Winnipeg Jetsaccording to the Winnipeg Free Press. This is at the same time prudent and obvious from a marketing perspective and completely nonsensical from every other point of view.

(Also, I'm distressed to point out SB Nation's autotagger no longer recognizes the name "Atlanta Thrashers.")

The Winnipeg Jets played in Manitoba's crown jewel from 1972 to 1996. They then left, becoming the Phoenix Coyotes. That is where the franchise remains to this day, as do the team's official record books.

The Atlanta Thrashers played in the most wonderful city on earth from 1999 to 2011. They then left, becoming the Winnipeg Jets, which is also the original name of the franchise that currently plays in Arizona as the Phoenix Coyotes. There are now two teams that are the Winnipeg Jets.

And, no, it didn't make any sense when the Baltimore Ravens took over the Baltimore Colts history while the new Cleveland Browns adopted the departed Baltimore Ravens'. You're really just going to have to get used to me complaining about it.
