Around the perimeter of the Atlanta sports world.
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets need an offensive line coach, something they hadn't planned on picking up this offseason. Co-offensive line coach Todd Spencer was let go on National Signing Day due to a recruiting violation, which means the Jackets either have to pluck an O-line coach whose current team is already lining up spring practice, or find itself an out-of-work coach who's already on decent terms with the Jackets.
Why, hello:
Sort of surprising, but I'm told Ralph Friedgen may end up on the Georgia Tech coaching staff. bit.ly/xpkQEX

A little something for the ladies. Mike Smith and his two new coordinators:

Atlanta Hawks all-star Joe Johnson needs just 13 points to become the seventh player in Atlanta Hawks history to score 10,000 career points. Johnson is currently seventh on the Hawks all-time list with 9,987 points and is just 595 points behind Kevin Willis for sixth place.
The Auburn Tigers already added former Georgia defensive coordinator Brian Van Gorder and appear to be on the verge of adding another former UGA defensive coordinator in Willie Martinez.
RT @BTNTomDienhart: A former Auburn staffer confirmed to me that it's a done deal: Willie Martinez is joining the AU staff.

The Bucs seem to be hiring ALL OF THE COLLEGE COACHES.
The prospect lists just keep on coming out and the latest one is courtesy of Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus. The Braves have been well-represented on just about every prospects rankings list this offseason, but Goldstein has just three players in his top-100 from the organization.
We have the rankings and a few thoughts after the jump.
Days after Vanderbilt Commodores coach James Franklin explained what he meant by appearing to say Georgia Bulldogs signee Josh Dawson isn't a "man of honor" for flipping on the Dores, he's apparently decided to see what 2013 UGA commit Shaq Wiggins is made of:
#Vandy has just offered new #UGA DB commit Shaq Wiggins of Sandy Creek, Ga.

As has been sort of expected for quite a while now, the Mountain West and Conference-USA are merging to make a new conference, and looking to add something like eight to 12 schools in the process. Since they're not in cahoots with the WAC or Sun Belt, it's hard to figure where they'll find a whole new conference worth of teams without calling up from FCS. Speaking of calling teams up from FCS, have we got a pair of recommendations!
Sunday night, Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White deemed Nicki Minaj's Grammy performance "terrible" via Twitter before later backtracking and admitting he just didn't get it. (Which is cool, because nobody else got it either). Something tells you he'll also have to reframe this argument a little at some point soon:
As far as backup NFL quarterbacks go, Chris Redman certainly looks the part. A guy who was out of football for almost three years as an insurance salesman returned to pro football with the Falcons during their disastrous 2007 campaign.
Despite the terrible team performance, Redman proved himself to be the best quarterback out of a painfully inept group that featured the likes of Joey Harrington and Byron Leftwich. He's stuck around as Matt Ryan's backup ever since and has been... well, there.
I can't say that Redman has been a good backup, because he hasn't. I also wouldn't go so far as to call him bad either. He's been a solid game manager the few times Atlanta has had need of his services, but regardless of those performances no one really feels confident that he could win games as a starter. The general reaction whenever Ryan is slow to get up really emphasizes the lack of confidence everyone has in Redman.
With Redman's impending free agency only one month away, the Falcons should probably look for a backup with more upside.
