Braves vs Pirates Final Score: Atlanta's backups fall in Pittsburgh, 5-1

Charles LeClaire-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

The Braves started just two of their regulars on Tuesday night. With the playoffs beginning in about 72 hours, manager Fredi Gonzalez elected to rest all of his starters before the regular season wraps up Wednesday.

The Atlanta Braves sat Chipper Jones, Jason Heyward, Martin Prado and most of their other regular starters on Tuesday night to get them some rest before the playoffs begin Friday evening. Michael Bourn and Andrelton Simmons were the only two starters who took the field, and that was only because both players had recently missed time with injuries. In the end, the Pirates were able to hold off Atlanta's backups in a 5-1 win.

Tommy Hanson wrapped up a pretty mediocre season with another poor performance on the mound. He worked six innings on the mound, surrendering five runs on nine hits and a walk. He struck out six. Hanson ends the year with a 13-10 record and a 4.48 ERA.

Kevin Correia was much better for the Pirates. The veteran righty pitched 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball, scattering six hits and a walk. The win improved his record to 12-11 this season, and his ERA dropped to 4.21.

The Braves and Pirates will wrap up the regular season at 12:35 p.m. ET on Wednesday. Ben Sheets and A.J. Burnett will make the start. Look for Atlanta to play their regulars for a couple of innings before pulling them for backups.
