Around the perimeter of the Atlanta sports world.
If DeLoss Dodds were Saddam Hussein, then Chip Brown would be Muhammad Saeed al-Sahhaf, aka Baghdad Bob. With that caveat out of the way, Brown is reporting that Georgia Tech has put out feelers to the Big XII. To me, this calls into question how Georgia Tech sees itself in terms of its sports programs. If Florida State and Clemson were to move to the Big XII, then the ACC would return to its roots as a basketball conference. (A move by Virginia Tech to the SEC would complete the dynamic.) As Bobby Big Wheel pointed out this week, being a basketball conference isn't what it used to be, but at least the ACC would be firmly within its niche and could brand itself accordingly, as opposed to being a two-headed monster where the football schools are pulling in one direction and the basketball schools are pulling in another.
So where is Georgia Tech?
This is how my brain works when I am going for a run this morning. I was at the start of a jog, listening to the Solid Verbal interview with Chris Brown from Smart Football* and Dan Rubinstein was talking about how he normally does not get much out of athlete interviews, but he enjoyed talking to recent NFL draftees (especially David Wilson) at an NFLPA event at the Rose Bowl. My first thought was to agree with Rubinstein. I don't really care for interviews with sports players and coaches, either. What is the point of listening to 5-10 minutes of an athlete doing his best to avoid saying anything? This mentality was sufficiently mocked in Bull Durham and then, more recently, by Brewers closer David Axford.
At this stage, it occurred to me why athletes say nothing: they don't want to be criticized afterwards in the event that they lose to the team or player about whom they said something critical. The Mayhem in the AM hosts on 790 illustrated this perfectly after the Hawks lost their series against the Celtics...
In the wake of the Orlando Magic's decision to fire Stan Van Gundy and part ways with general manager Otis Smith, Atlanta Journal-Constitution writer Jeff Schultz wonders out loud if Dwight Howard is worth the trouble? Sorry Jeff but the answer is yes.
It's often a young boy's dream to be a ballboy for a Major League Baseball team, especially if it's a contender like the Tampa Bay Rays. The benefit of being around professional baseball players is immeasurable to young baseball fans.
This particular one may not be the next Evan Longoria, but he'll always remember the day Atlanta Braves pitcher Livan Hernandez gave him a hard time for failing to field a ground ball, going as far as showering him with sunflower seeds.
From a few minutes spent playing around with the Braves' Baseball Reference page:
Thomas DeCoud's wedding cake pays homage to sneakerheads everywhere.
While there are few who would root against Chipper Jones in any park, there will be plenty cheering for him in Tampa on Saturday.
Tampa is the closest MLB city to Jones' hometown of Pierson, Fla., so as many as 100 people will be making the trip to Tropicana Field, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
"They're getting a big 50-seat bus and bringing it down, tailgating, all kinds of stuff," Jones said. "So if you hear a bunch of rednecks up in the rafters, that's my crew."
Former Florida State Seminoles head coach Bobby Bowden has been fairly shameless in his public statements about the 'Noles original move to the ACC back in the early 90s - he wanted to play in an easier conference and win more of the time, basically. FSU spurned the SEC's advances for years, and now with the Big 12 apparently showing interest, he's lobbed the same opinion from retirement - stay on the easy path (courtesy of College Football Talk):
Mike Minor's struggles continue as the Braves left handed starter is now 0-2 with an 11.25 ERA in his past four starts. He has allowed at least six runs in each of those outings and has now allowed 27 earned runs in the past 20 2/3 innings pitched.
It is looking like Alabama will once again be kicking off a football season at the Georgia Dome as the Crimson Tide and West Virginia are working out the details to meet in the 2014 season opener.
WVU v. Alabama to kick off 2014 season is "in the works." Requires some juggling on WVU's end to make it official.
