2011 NFL Draft: Darren Evans, Not Ryan Williams, Leaving Virginia Tech Early

Stay connected for news and updates

While redshirt sophomore Virginia Tech Hokies RB Ryan Williams could still decide to declare early for the 2011 NFL Draft, it was junior backfield mate Darren Evans who announced his decision to leave early in a Thursday press conference. Williams had been reported to be making his announcement today, but Evans took his place.

Mocking The Draft projects Williams as a second-round pick, but Evans as a late-rounder. Evans rushed for 854 yards this year, including an 160-yard outburst against N.C. State.

David Wilson will likely take over feature-back duties if the Evans Williams Bourbon lineup leaves. With Tyrod Taylor’s eligibility up, don’t be surprised to see an all-new Hokies backfield next year.

Heather Dinich has a word from Evans on what Williams is going through while making his decision:

I understand what he’s going through, and as a friend I’d rather not be bugging him about it, because I know enough people are.
